CALL TO WORSHIP
Our God created this world and set the earth on its foundations.
We worship God the Creator.
Our God heals the broken world, bringing hope to the hopeless.
We worship God our Redeemer.
Our God gives us strength and direction to face each new day .
We worship God our Sustainer.
Come let us worship our God!
*OPENING HYMN #37 (red) ‘Let All Things Now Living’
1. Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving to God our Creator triumphantly raise;
who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us, by guiding us on to the end of our days.
God’s banners are o’er us, pure light goes before us, a pillar of fire shining forth in the night:
till shadows have vanished, all fearfulness banished, as forward we travel from light into light.
2. By law God enforces, the stars in their courses, the sun in it’s orbit obediently shine;
the hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains, the depths of the ocean proclaim God divine,
We too should be voicing our love and rejoicing; With glad adoration, a song let us raise,
till all things now living unite in thanksgiving: to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We pray for forgiveness this day. For choosing power over service, forgive us. For seeking glory rather than humility, forgive us. For pushing ourselves to the front, when our presence is needed on the sidelines, forgive us. Help us know where we are needed and how best to serve you and your people. Guide us, that we might be your hands of healing and compassion for a world in need. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION and SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 104:1-5, 24, 35c (read responsively)
1Bless the LORD, O my soul.
O LORD my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honor and majesty,
2wrapped in light as with a garment.
You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
3you set the beams of your chambers on the waters,
you make the clouds your chariot,
you ride on the wings of the wind,
4you make the winds your messengers,
fire and flame your ministers.
5You set the earth on its foundations,
so that it shall never be shaken.
24O LORD, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
35Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more.
Bless the LORD, O my soul.
Praise the LORD!
Mark 10:35-45
35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 36And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" 37And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." 38But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" 39They replied, "We are able."
Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them,
"You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
SERMON Seeking Glory
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostle’s Creed (Modern Version) (on screen)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*HYMN OF RESPONSE #838 (red) ‘Standing on the Promises’
1. Standing on the promises of Christ my king, through eternal ages let his praises ring;
glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing, I'm standing on the promises of God.
2. Standing on the promises that cannot fail, when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
by the living Word of God I shall prevail, standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing, I'm standing on the promises of God.
3. Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord, bound to him eternally by love's strong cord,
overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword, standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing, I'm standing on the promises of God.
4. Standing on the promises I cannot fall, listening every moment to the Spirit's call,
resting in my Savior as my all in all, standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing, I'm standing on the promises of God.
