CALL TO WORSHIP
The Lord has chosen us and invited us.
     We come with joy to worship our God.
God lifts us up and sets our feet upon the rock.
     We lift our hearts to the One who invites and restores us.
Jesus says, “Come and see.”
     We come with open hearts to know him and to worship him.

*OPENING HYMN  #294 (blue) “Wherever I May Wander”
Wherever I may wander, wherever I may be,
I’m certain of my Maker’s love; God’s care is over me.
God made the great high mountains, and made the wide blue sea;
God made the sky where airplanes fly; God made the world, and me.

Throughout the whole creation I see God’s loving care
For everyone in every land, God’s children everywhere.
Wherever I may wander, wherever I may be,
I’m certain of my Maker’s love; God’s care is over me.

*CALL TO CONFESSION and *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of steadfast love, we come, aware of how easily we miss your voice, hurrying through our days, distracted and burdened, and failing to notice your gentle invitation into relationship with you. We confess that our actions, and our failures to act, do not always reflect Your love. Forgive us, Lord. Draw us close, set our feet on solid ground, and open our hearts to hear your invitation. Teach us to live in your presence, to receive your grace, and to respond with lives shaped by faithful relationship with you.  We pray this in Jesus’s name, Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

 *GLORIA PATRI (on screen)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
          And to the Holy Ghost.
          As it was in the beginning, is now,
          And ever shall be,
          World without end. Amen, Amen.

CHILDREN’S TIME

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION and SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 40:1-5 (responsive), 1 Corinthians 1:1, 3-9
1   I waited patiently for the LORD;
          he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2   He drew me up from the desolate pit,
          out of the miry bog,
     and set my feet upon a rock,
          making my steps secure.

3   He put a new song in my mouth,
          a song of praise to our God.
     Many will see and fear,
          and put their trust in the LORD.

4   Happy are those who make
          the LORD their trust,
     who do not turn to the proud,
          to those who go astray after false gods.

5   You have multiplied, O LORD my God,
          your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you.
     Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
          they would be more than can be counted.

1 Corinthians 1:1, 3-9
1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5for in every way you have been enriched in him,
in speech and knowledge of every kind --
 6just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you --
7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for
the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

HYMN  “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” (on screen/insert)
Refrain:
     Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
     Look full in His wonderful face,
     And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
     In the light of His glory and grace.

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free! [Refrain]

GOSPEL READING
 John 1:35-39
35The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed,
“Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39He said to them, “Come and see.”
They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

SERMON   The Voice of God Invites Us

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE  #384 (blue) “O Love That Wilt Not let Me Go”
O love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee;
I give Thee back the life I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that follows all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to Thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in Thy sunshine's blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to Thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.

O cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from Thee;
I lay in dust life's glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Our Father, Who Art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.    Amen.

OFFERING OF OURSELVES AND OUR RESOURCES

DOXOLOGY   Handbell duet

*CLOSING HYMN   #307 (blue) “Fight the Good Fight”
Fight the good fight with all thy might;
Christ is thy strength and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God's good grace,
Lift up thine eyes, and seek Christ’s face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.

Cast care aside, lean on thy guide;
God’s boundless mercy will provide;
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.

Faint not nor fear, God’s arms are near;
God changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and Thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.
