CALL TO WORSHIP
We come, drawn by the Spirit, to the One who calls us to life.
     Yet the world tempts us, and our hearts are often divided.
God meets us in our struggle, offering strength when we are weak.
     We worship the One who leads us through trials and restores our souls.
Come, all who are weary or wandering
     God’s mercy is greater than our sin!

*OPENING HYMN  #466 (blue) “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My dear Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of God’s grace!

Jesus, the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

Christ breaks the power of reigning sin,
And sets the prisoner free;
Christ’s blood can make the sinful clean,
Christ’s blood availed for me.

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

*CALL TO CONFESSION and *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we admit that we are easily tempted. We turn from your ways and follow our own desires. We give in to what is easy, rather than what is right, and hide from you when we feel shame or fear. Forgive us, O God, and lead us back to your path of life. Renew our hearts, strengthen our wills, and remind us of your grace.  We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
…In Christ, we are forgiven and called to rise and follow.
     People: Thanks be to God, Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI (on screen)
          Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
          And to the Holy Ghost.
          As it was in the beginning, is now,
          And ever shall be,
          World without end. Amen, Amen.

CHILDREN’S TIME

SPECIAL MUSIC    “I Need Thee Every Hour”     Choir

 I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord,
No tender voice like thine can peace afford,
I need thee, oh I need thee, every hour I need thee,
Oh bless me now my Savior, I come to thee.

I need thee every hour, stay though near by,
Temptations lose their pow’r when thou art nigh,
I need thee, oh I need thee, every hour I need thee,
Oh bless me now my Savior, I come to thee.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION and SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7 (abridged)
The LORD God placed the man in the garden of Eden to care for it. He said, “You may eat freely from any tree, but not from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; if you do, you will die.”
The serpent, craftier than any animal, asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat from any tree?” She replied, “We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden, but not the one in the middle, or we will die.” The serpent said, “You will not die; your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Seeing that the tree was desirable, she ate its fruit and gave some to her husband, and he ate too. Then their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked, so they made coverings for themselves.
When they heard the LORD God walking in the garden, they hid. God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you and was afraid because I am naked, so I hid.”

Psalm 32: 1-5, 10-11  (responsive)
1   Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven,
          whose sin is covered.
2   Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
3   While I kept silence, my body wasted away
          through my groaning all day long.
4   For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
          my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

5   Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
          and I did not hide my iniquity;
     I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
          and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Romans 5:12, 18-19
12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned
18Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. 19For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

Matthew 4:1-11   (Responsive)
1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.2He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.
3The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
4But he answered, “It is written,
     ‘One does not live by bread alone,
          but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
     ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
          and ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
     so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; 9and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” 11Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

SERMON   Meeting Jesus in Temptation

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE  #85 (blue) “What Wondrous Love Is This”
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the heavy cross for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the heavy cross for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing.
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme, I will sing!

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,
And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
And through eternity I’ll sing on!

*CLOSING HYMN  ” Tell Me the Story of Jesus” (Fanny Crosby)
Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word;
tell me the story most precious, sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels, in chorus, sang as they welcomed His birth,
“Glory to God in the highest! Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Refrain:
Tell me the story of Jesus, write on my heart every word;
tell me the story most precious, sweetest that ever was heard.

Fasting alone in the desert, tell of the days that are past,
how for our sins He was tempted, yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor, tell of the sorrow He bore;
He was despised and afflicted, homeless, rejected, and poor. [Refrain]

Tell of the cross where they nailed Him, writhing in anguish and pain;
tell of the grave where they laid Him, tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender, clearer than ever I see:
Stay, let me weep while you whisper, love paid the ransom for me. [Refrain]
