CALL TO WORSHIP
Beloved, let us love one another,
     for love comes from God.
God’s love has been poured into our lives,
     so that we may share that love with others.
We are called not only to speak of love,
     but to live it through acts of kindness, mercy, and service.
     Come, let us worship God, who first loved us.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Loving God, you call us to love not only with words, but with actions and with truth. Yet too often we keep our distance from the needs around us and have hurried past opportunities to serve. Forgive us, O God. Open our hearts to the people you place before us each day. Teach us to love as Christ loves so that our faith may be seen not only in what we say, but in how we serve and care for others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION and SCRIPTURE READING
1 John 4: 7-12, 15-16, 19-21
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us:
He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
 
15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
 
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,  cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
 
1 John 3: 16-18  
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
 
 
SERMON  Love in Action 
 
 
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH 
This is how God showed his love among us:  He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. This we believe.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
