CALL TO WORSHIP
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
Ignite in us a passion for your presence.
Come like fire, burning with hope.
Come like wind, stirring our hearts.
Come like water, washing over our lives.
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
*OPENING HYMN #1 (red) “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” (v 1,4)
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name,
in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.
*CALL TO CONFESSION and *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Spirit of the Living God, we confess that we have stifled your fire and resisted your wind. You pour out your gifts upon us, but we hoard them or ignore them. You send us to speak good news and live boldly, but we stay silent and play it safe. Forgive us, O God. Set our hearts ablaze with your love, refresh our souls with your living water, and carry us on the wind of your grace, that we may be your faithful people, on fire for your mission in the world. Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*GLORIA PATRI (on screen)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
The Fire, The Wind, The Water, a Pentecost Dramatic Reading Readers: Linda Barnett, Robby Flint, and Carrie VanBuren
God's presence is revealed through fire and wind at Sinai
HYMN: #65 (red) “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” (v 1)
Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty.
Hold me with thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me till I want no more;
feed me till I want no more.
God’s people recall deliverance through sacred celebrations
SPECIAL MUSIC: “Mourning into Dancing” (choir)
Jesus foretells the coming baptism by the Holy Spirit
HYMN: #288 (red) “Spirit of the Living God”
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Pentecost arrives with fire and wind
HYMN: #66 (red) “Every Time I Feel the Spirit”
Refrain:
O every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.
Yes, every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.
Upon the mountain, when my Lord spoke,
out of God’s mouth came fire and smoke.
Looked all around me, it looked so fine,
Till I asked my Lord if all was mine. [Refrain]
Jordan river, chilly and cold,
it chills the body but not the soul.
There is but one train upon this track.
It runs to heaven and then right back. [Refrain]
The Spirit reverses confusion initiated at Babel, uniting God’s people
HYMN: #289 (red) “On Pentecost They Gathered” (v 1,2)
On Pentecost they gathered quite early in the day,
A band of Christ’s disciples, to worship, sing, and pray.
A mighty wind came blowing, filled all the swirling air,
And tongues of fire aglowing inspired each person there.
The people all around them were startled and amazed
To understand their language, as Christ the Lord they praised.
What universal message, what great good news was here?
That Christ, once dead, is risen to vanquish all our fear.
Peter proclaims Jesus crucified and risen, offering Spirit and salvation
HYMN: #475 (red) “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (v 1,3)
Come, thou Fount of every blessing; tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love!
O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above.
Peter calls the people to repent and be baptized
Hymn: #375 (red) “Shall we Gather at the River” (v 1,2,3)
Shall we gather at the river,
where bright angel feet have trod;
with its crystal tide forever
flowing by the throne of God?
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river;
gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day. [Refrain]
Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown. [Refrain]
The Spirit shapes a new community
HYMN: (handout) “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” (v 1,2,4)
I have decided to follow Jesus,
I have decided to follow Jesus,
I have decided to follow Jesus,
No turning back, no turning back.
The world behind me, the cross before me,
The world behind me, the cross before me,
The world behind me, the cross before me,
No turning back, no turning back.
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
No turning back, no turning back.
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from a Brief Statement of Faith 1983)
We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

*CLOSING HYMN #300 (red) “We Are One in the Spirit” (v 1,2,3)
We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord;
We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord;
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand;
We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand;
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land:
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
We will work with each other; we will work side by side;
We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
And we’ll guard human dignity and save human pride.
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
