 CALL TO WORSHIP
We gather to worship the triune God
     The One who spoke in the beginning and created something out of nothing
The One who took on the sorrows of humanity to set us free from sin
     The One whose Spirit rests continually upon us, to guide and advocate for us
We gather to worship the triune God
     Let us worship our God, three, but one

*OPENING HYMN  #139 (blue) “Come Thou Almighty King”
Come, Thou Almighty King,
help us Thy name to sing; help us to praise:
Father, all glorious, o'er all victorious,
come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, Thou Incarnate Word,
gird on Thy mighty sword, our prayer attend:
come, and Thy people bless, and give Thy Word success:
Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour:
Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To Thee, great One in Three,
The highest praises be hence, evermore.
Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see,
and to eternity love and adore!

*CALL TO CONFESSION and *PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy and triune God, You alone live in perfect relationship, one God in three persons, mutual and loving, ever seeking reconciliation and unity.  You have called us to be in a similar relationship with you and with others, yet we confess that our relationships are imperfect.  We have allowed sin to drive us apart from one another and from you.  Forgive us and restore us, draw us close and bind us together in your mercy.  In the saving name of your son, Jesus Christ, and through the work of your Holy Spirit.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GLORIA PATRI
                 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
                 And to the Holy Ghost.
                 As it was in the beginning, is now,
                 And ever shall be,
                 World without end. Amen, Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION and SCRIPTURE READING
Psalm 8: 1-9  (responsive)  (Revised Standard Version)
1  O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is thy name in all the earth!
Thou whose glory above the heavens is chanted
2  by the mouth of babes and infants,
thou hast founded a bulwark because of thy foes,
    to still the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
    the moon and the stars which thou hast established;
4 what is man that thou art mindful of him,
    and the son of man that thou dost care for him?

5 Yet thou hast made him little less than God,
    and dost crown him with glory and honor.
6 Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
    and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
    whatever passes along the paths of the sea.

9 O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is thy name in all the earth!

Romans 5: 1-5
5 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God.
3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

Gospel reading:  John 16:12-15
12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

SERMON   The Incomprehensible Trinity

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE  #555 (blue) “Now Thank We All our God”
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things hath done, in whom this world rejoices;
who, from our mothers' arms hath blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
and keep us in God’s grace, and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God,
who reign in highest heaven,
to Father and to Son and Spirit now be given.
The one eternal God, whom heaven and earth adore,
The God who was, and is, and shall be evermore.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.

OFFERING OF OURSELVES AND OUR RESOURCES

*DOXOLOGY
     Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
     Praise Him, all creatures here below;
     Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
     Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.   Amen.

*CLOSING HYMN  #562 (blue) “Eternal Father Strong to Save”
Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm has bound the restless wave,
Who bade the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Savior, whose almighty word the winds and waves submissive heard,
Who walked upon the foaming deep, and calm amid its rage did sleep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Holy Spirit, who did brood upon the chaos wild and rude,
And bade its angry tumult cease, and gave, for wild confusion, peace:
O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and power, all travelers guard in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire, and foe, protect them where-so-e'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee glad praise from air and land and sea.
