CALL TO WORSHIP
We gather to tell of God's love,
of faith that is shared from generation to generation.
We give thanks for those who have shared their faith with us.
We pray that our lives may bear witness to those who follow.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
For his steadfast love endures forever.

Gracious and merciful God, You have called us to walk in your ways and to make known your love from generation to generation. We know that we are examples not only by the things we do and say, but also by the things we leave undone and unsaid. By your grace, our words and actions can reflect your love and faithfulness. Yet we also know that we have led others astray through our impatience, our pride, our neglect, and our failure to follow your will. Forgive us, O God. Renew us by your Spirit. Help us to walk more faithfully in the way of Christ, that our lives may bear witness to your grace and point others to your love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;
I will utter hidden things, things from of old--
3 things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;
we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders he has done.
5 He decreed statutes for Jacob, and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors, to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds, but would keep his commands.

11 Jesus told this parable: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.
17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
20 So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
1 Kings 2: 1-3
When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, 3 and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.”
Of David it is written:
"David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite." (1 Kings 15:5)
Of Solomon it is written:
"His heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David." (1 Kings 11:4)
Of Rehoboam it is written:
"Judah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord." (1 Kings 14:22)
Of Asa it is written:
"Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his father David had done." (1 Kings 15:11)
Of Jehoshaphat it is written:
"He walked in all the way of his father Asa; he did not turn aside from it, but did what was right in the sight of the Lord." (1 Kings 22:43)
Of Jotham it is written:
"He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, just as his father Uzziah had done." (2 Kings 15:34)
Of Ahaz it is written:
"He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had done." (2 Kings 16:2)

"He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, just as his ancestor David had done." (2 Kings 18:3)

"He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left." (2 Kings 22:2)

SERMON Faith Through Generations: A Story of Struggle and Grace
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
