CALL TO WORSHIP
We worship God with song and dance,
     singing God’s praise and shouting for joy.
We worship God with silence and sighs,
     grieving for loss and longing for comfort.
We worship God with prayers and hands,
     praying for healing and working for peace.
Let us create a sabbath space
    and worship the God who gives us life.

*OPENING HYMN  #403 (blue) “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer!

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield thee; Thou wilt find a solace there.

*CALL TO CONFESSION
It is only by the power of God that we are able to stand against evil. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We know that you call your people to lives of service and works of justice. Forgive us, O Lord, when we keep our lives just loud enough to drown out your call. Forgive us, O Lord, when we keep our days just busy enough to convince ourselves that we have a righteous excuse. We know that you work for the healing of all that is broken in the world. Heal us, O Lord, of our blindness by your grace. Forgive us, O Lord, and free us to try again.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Now stand firm in your faith, covered by the saving grace of God and ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
      Thanks be to God.

*GLORIA PATRI (on screen)
                 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
                 And to the Holy Ghost.
                 As it was in the beginning, is now,
                 And ever shall be,
                 World without end. Amen, Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Hosea 1:2-10
2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and have children of prostitution, for the land commits great prostitution by forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

4 And the Lord said to him, “Name him Jezreel, for in a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 On that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

6 She conceived again and bore a daughter. Then the Lord said to him, “Name her Lo-ruhamah for I will no longer have pity on the house of Israel or forgive them. 7 But I will have pity on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God; I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

8 When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and bore a son. 9 Then the Lord said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”
10 Yet the number of the people of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which can be neither measured nor numbered, and in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.”

Gospel:  Luke 11:1-13
1 He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 So he said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, may your name be revered as holy.
    May your kingdom come.
3     Give us each day our daily bread.
4     And forgive us our sins,
        for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
    And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

5 And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7 And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything out of friendship, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
9 “So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asked for[e] a fish, would give a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if the child asked for an egg, would give a scorpion? 13 If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

SERMON  Teach Us to Pray                              Mark Werner, CRE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH  - APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE  (on screen/handout)  “Sweet Hour of Prayer”
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! that calls me from a world of care,
and bids me at my Father's throne make all my wants and wishes known;
In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief,
and oft escaped the tempter's snare by thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! thy wings shall my petition bear
to Him whose truth and faithfulness engage the waiting soul to bless;
And since He bids me seek His face, believe His word, and trust His grace,
I'll cast on Him my every care, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! May I thy consolation share,
till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height, I view my home, and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I’ll drop, and rise to seize the everlasting prize;
and shout, while passing thro’ the air, farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.

OFFERING OF OURSELVES AND OUR RESOURCES

*DOXOLOGY
          Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
          Praise Him, all creatures here below;
          Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
          Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.   Amen.

 *CLOSING HYMN  (on screen/handout) "Take Time to be Holy"
Take time to be holy,
speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
much time spend in secret with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy, let Him be thy guide,
and run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow thy Lord,
and, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
each thought and each motive beneath His control;
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
