Many of us have seen videos of elaborate domino displays. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of colorful dominoes are carefully arranged into spirals, flowers, bridges, and intricate geometric patterns. Each domino is placed with purpose, contributing to something far more beautiful than a single tile standing alone.
Then comes the moment everyone is waiting for. With one gentle push, the first domino falls. It tips the next one, then the next, and before long the entire design comes to life. What looked like a collection of individual pieces suddenly reveals itself as one beautifully connected chain of events. Life often works the same way. Someone offers a sincere compliment. A friend takes time to listen. A stranger holds the door open or simply smiles. Those small acts brighten someone's day. In turn, that person becomes a little more patient and a little more willing to extend kindness to someone else. The chain continues. Unfortunately, not every chain creates something beautiful. Someone speaks harshly to you at work. You come home frustrated and snap at your spouse. Your spouse becomes impatient with the children. The children carry that frustration as they interact with friends. Before long, one unkind moment has touched lives far beyond the original encounter. Hurt has a way of spreading. There is one important difference, however, between people and dominoes. Dominoes have no choice. Once one falls, the next one falls automatically. We do have a choice. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). That means the chain is not inevitable. When someone is impatient with us, we do not have to pass that impatience along. When someone wounds us with words, we are not required to wound someone else. The chain can stop with us. Even better, a new chain can begin with us. What if, when we were hurt, we chose forgiveness? What if, when someone spoke harshly to us, we responded with gentle words? One gracious response can become the first domino in a new direction . Every day we arrange the “dominoes” of our lives. Every word we speak, every act of kindness we offer, every forgiveness we extend becomes another piece in the beautiful pattern God is creating through us. We may never see the whole design, but God does. So this week, choose carefully the first domino you set in motion. Start the chain with a kind word. Offer forgiveness. Share a smile. Speak encouragement. That first domino may reach farther than you ever imagined.
