SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
October 10, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
O Lord, satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,
and prosper for us the work of our hands.
*HYMN #263 “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise”
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small.
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish, but naught changeth Thee.
Thou rulest in glory, Thou rulest in light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight.
All praise we would render; O help us to see
‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you have made heaven and earth and all that is good; and in Jesus Christ you show us that the secret of joy is a heart set free from selfish desires. Help us to delight in simple things and to rejoice always in the richness of your bounty; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
God save us despite our being unworthy of that salvation. In response to that grace, let us confess the ways we have fallen short.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
United in your love, O God, we are one body across the globe. We are branches of one family whose roots run in the waters of grace. Still, O Lord, we do not act like one body. We find ways to distance ourselves with more than miles. We find ways to divide ourselves into endless groups of “us” and “them.” Again and again, you call us back to the waters; again and again, we turn away. Forgive us, uniting God, and by your forgiveness, challenge us to tend to each other’s wounds.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Hear the good news! Because God loves us, we lack for nothing; because God forgives us, we have everything we need; because God surrounds us with sisters and brothers, we do not journey alone.
Committing everything to God, trusting in the One who redeems us, we decide to live as God’s faithful and forgiven people. Amen.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God our helper, by your Holy Spirit, open our minds, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may be led into your truth and taught your will, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
May God give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation
so that you may know the hope to which you are called.
Eph. 1:17, 18
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Hebrews 4:12-16
12 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
A TIME FOR CHILDREN
Mark 10:17-31
Here’s a reader’s theatre setting on the topic of wealth and generosity. It combines verses from Mark 10:17-22, 12:38-44 and 2 Corinthians 9:6-15.
RN: As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him.
Liturgist: Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
RN: Why do you call me good? No one is good—except God alone.
You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’
Liturgist: Teacher, all these I have kept since I was a boy.
RN: Jesus looked at him and loved him.
One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.
Liturgist: At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
RN: I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny par t of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
Liturgist: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
RN: Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
God says: I will put my laws in their minds, and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Heb. 8:10
Thanks be to God.
REFLECTION: “When the Last are First” Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN: #391 “Take My Life and Let It Be”
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days;
Let them flow in endless praise,
Let them flow in endless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose,
Every power as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; he third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
There is only one Lord and God from whom all things come and for whom we live. Let us offer our lives to the Lord.
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Almighty God, you continue to bless our lives in many intrinsic and intangible ways. When our financial gifts are used to support mission and ministry, we see other people blessed in very tangible ways. Our desire is to place you first in our financial decision-making. May this offering be a time when we do place you first and when we are grateful for the opportunity to support mission and ministry in your name. We pray in the name of the One through whom all things are possible. Amen. Mark 10:17-31 (David S. Bell)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Here’s a prayer of intercession inspired by the suggested scripture readings for Proper 23B (the 20th Sunday after Pentecost). It was written by Paul Sauer.
Lord God, you are the God of justice, caring for the poor, the wronged, the used and the ignored. Open our eyes to see every human in need as your child, our sister, or our brother. Inspire us to care the most for those who have the least.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Holy Spirit, help us see ourselves in the bitter lament of Job, who knows you are listening but cannot sense your nearness nor the reason for his suffering. Deliver us, like you delivered him.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Holy Spirit, we know our days are numbered. Help us live in holy expectation of your coming.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Heavenly Father, when we feel forsaken, lift up our eyes to see life continuing, your new world dawning, and reunion assured.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Lord Jesus Christ, tested like we are but without sin, give us boldness to approach your throne of grace, hand extended, love expected.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Lord Jesus, we worry with the disciples that our wealth is in the way. Knowing how hard it is foe the rich to enter the kingdom of God, console us with the truth that everything is possible by God’s grace.
Loving God, you hear our prayers: You live among us.
Hear us as we pray for those who need help and healing ____________

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #388 “O, Jesus I Have Promised”
O Jesus, I have promised
To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
My Master and my friend;
I shall not fear the battle
If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
If Thou wilt be my guide.
O let me feel Thee near me!
The world is ever near:
I see the sights that dazzle,
The tempting sounds I hear;
My foes are ever near me,
Around me and within;
But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
And shield my soul from sin.
O let me hear Thee speaking
In accents clear and still,
Above the storms of passion,
The murmurs of self-will.
O speak to reassure me,
To hasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen,
Thou guardian of my soul.
O Jesus, Thou hast promised
To all who follow Thee
That where Thou art in glory
There shall Thy servant be.
And, Jesus, I have promised
To serve Thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow,
My Master and my friend.

BENEDICTION
May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent, one from the other. Amen. (Mizpah Benediction)
POSTLUDE
Thanks to everyone who helped out with our worship this morning. It takes a village to raise a child the saying says. It takes a village to do worship virtually, our new saying during these days of pandemic. Stay safe and well. Pray often. Love always! Blessings for your week!
