SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
20th Sunday after Pentecost
10-18-2020
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
We come from the world, with thoughts of the world pulling at our mind,
but we enter now into the quiet and comfort of God’s presence.
While demands of our world pull us one way and then another,
God's presence is constant and God’s presence is safe.
Come into God's presence, for God is among us now.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Loving, living God, be among us now. Show us your ways. Guide our steps. Live in us, that we may be people of steadfast hope and powerful giving. Help us hear your words, challenging us to give you all the things that are yours. Help us remember that all we are and all we have are gifts from you, gifts to be shared in service and love. Help us be a holy people who receive your word with joy and live your message with love. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lord God we come to you from our challenging lives to seek your peace; we come to you with our questions and uncertainties, our worries and anxieties. We have not relied on your word or wisdom, we have not shown concern or compassion when we should have; we have not loved our neighbor as we love ourselves. We have remained silent when we should have spoken and spoken when we should have been silent. We seize the moment to ask you from our chaotic lives for yet another chance of hearing you say to us “I am with you and your sins are forgiven.” We pray that from the grace we receive, that what we say and what we do will enable those around us to glimpse the life of your Son -- who gives us the simple reminder…Give to God what belongs to God.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
….We will rest in God’s mercy. Let us say,
Thanks be to God!
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Draw us close, Holy Spirit, as the Scriptures are read and the Word is proclaimed. May there be one voice we hear today — the voice of truth and grace. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Exodus 33:12-17 The MESSAGE (Choral reading by Robby & Donna Flint)
12-13 Moses said to God, “Look, you tell me, ‘Lead this people,’ but you don’t let me know whom you’re going to send with me. You tell me, ‘I know you well and you are special to me.’ If I am so special to you, let me in on your plans. That way, I will
14 God said, “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey to the end.”
15-16 Moses said, “If your presence doesn’t take the lead here, call this trip off right now. How else will it be known that you’re with me in this, with me and your people? Are you traveling with us or not? How else will we know that we’re special, I and your people, among all other people on this planet Earth?”
17 God said to Moses: “All right. Just as you say; this also I will do, for I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by name.”
Psalm 99:1-5
1 The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2 The LORD is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name.
Holy is he!
4 Mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Extol the LORD our God;
worship at his footstool.
Holy is he!
Matthew 22:15-22
15Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?" 18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, 20and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?" 21"Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." 22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
After Reading This is the Word of God….Thanks be to God
REFLECTION: “Hard Questions…Simple Answers” Donna Flint
AFFIRMATION:
The Apostles’ Creed Interpreted
What do you believe when you confess your faith in “God the Father Almighty”?
That God is a God of love, and that God’s love is powerful beyond measure.
What do you affirm when you confess your faith in Jesus Christ as “our Lord”?
That having been raised from the dead
he reigns with compassion and justice
over all things in heaven and on earth,
especially over those who confess him by faith;
and that by loving and serving him above all else,
we give glory and honor to God.
What do you believe when you confess your faith in the Holy Spirit?
That apart from the Holy Spirit,
our Lord can neither be loved, nor known, nor served.
The Holy Spirit is the personal bond
by which Jesus Christ unites us to himself,
the teacher who opens our hearts to Christ,
and the comforter who leads us to repentance,
empowering us to live in Christ’s service.
We offer ourselves: special music “The Prayer”- Donna Flint, Susan Smith, Dick Smith, Judy Smith, Bonnie Foster on piano
(By offering up our time, talents, intellect and resources, we’re asking God’s blessings upon them. Please prayerfully consider sending your tithes/offerings to the church by mail or by designating your church donation through the bill paying option if you do online banking. Sharing of ourselves within a phone call/text or email is another way in the offering of ourselves.)
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HYMN “If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee”
If thou but trust in God to guide thee,
With hopeful heart through all thy ways,
God will give strength, what-e’er betide thee,
To bear thee through the evil days.
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love
Builds on the rock that nought can move.
Only be still, and wait God’s leisure
In cheerful hope, with heart content
To take what-e’er thy Keeper’s pleasure
And all-discerning love hath sent.
No doubt our inmost wants are clear
To One who holds us always dear.
Sing, pray, and swerve not from God’s ways,
But do thine own part faithfully;
Trust the rich promises of grace
So shall they be fulfilled in thee.
God never yet forsook at need
The soul secured by trust indeed.
