SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
20th Sunday after Pentecost
October 23, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
How lovely is the house of the Lord.
How beautiful to be gathered in the presence of God.
How lovely is the dwelling place of the Lord.
How beautiful is the image of God we behold.
*HYMN #276 (Blue) ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.
Refrain:
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided.
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. [Refrain]
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! [Refrain]
CALL TO CONFESSION
The God of mercy waits in compassion to show mercy.
Together, let us seek God’s forgiveness.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Loving God, too often we hide beneath the veil of religion or trust too much in the good things we do. Smug and safe in our pews, we look down on those not here, thankful we are not like them. Shatter us with the truth that all have sinned, even us. We have failed to live as the people you call us to be. Cleanse us and restore us, for the sake of Jesus, our Savior. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Whether we are close or whether we are standing far off, God’s love in Jesus Christ seeks us out and gathers us in. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION
Holy, Holy, Holy One, guide us by the Spirit of truth to hear the Word of life you speak, and to give all glory, honor, and praise to your threefold name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
:
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 84:1-7 (read responsively)
1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, indeed it faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
3 Even the sparrow finds a home
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.
4 Happy are those who live in your house,
ever singing your praise. Selah
5 Happy are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
6 As they go through the valley of Baca,
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength;
the God of gods will be seen in Zion.
Luke 18:9-14
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other, for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Keep these words in your heart. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
Thanks be to God. Deuteronomy 6:6
OPENING MUSICAL PRAYER: ‘We Have Come into His House’
We have come into His house
Gathered in His name to worship Him,
We have come into His house
Gathered in His name to worship Him,
We have come into His house
Gathered in His name to worship Christ, the Lord
Worship Him, Jesus Christ, the Lord.
Let’s forget about ourselves
Concentrate on Him and worship Him,
Let’s forget about ourselves
Concentrate on Him and worship Him,
Let’s forget about ourselves
Concentrate on Him and worship Christ, the Lord
Worship Him, Jesus Christ, the Lord.
REFLECTION: ‘Disciples Don’t Judge’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
*HYMN #207 (Blue) ‘How Lovely, Lord’
How lovely, Lord, how lovely Is Your abiding place;
My soul is longing, fainting, to feast upon Your grace.
The sparrow finds a shelter, a place to build her nest,
And so Your temple calls us within its walls to rest.
In Your blest courts to worship, O God, a single day
Is better than a thousand if I from You should stray.
I’d rather keep the entrance and claim You as my Lord
Than revel in the riches the ways of sin afford.
A sun and shield forever are You, O Lord Most High;
You shower us with blessings; no good will You deny.
The saints, Your grace receiving, from strength to strength shall go,
And from their life shall rivers of blessing overflow.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, on the basis of God’s mercy, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable act of worship. Romans 12:1
SPECIAL MUSIC Bonnie Foster, pianist
*DOXOLOGY
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Caring God, we humble ourselves today by returning the bounty you first shared with us back to your care. Without pretension or self-righteousness, we resolve to be slow to judge and ready to provide aid. We strive to increase our commitment to being thoughtful, generous people. Help us to be unassuming in our service but bold in our witness. We pray in the name of the one who served you here on Earth, Jesus the Living Christ. Amen. (Luke 18:9-14 David S. Bell)

*HYMN #339 (Blue) ‘Be Thou My Vision’
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
Great God of heaven, my treasure Thou art.
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;
I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.
Heart of my heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
