SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Reformation Sunday
October 30, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
God is in the midst of the city, and it shall not be moved.
Come, behold the works of the Lord;
see what desolations God has brought on the earth.
Through the joy and challenge of daily living, God is faithful to us still.
We gather in thanksgiving, with open hearts and open minds,
seeking to offer God our worship and praise.
*HYMN #457 (Blue) ‘I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art’ (v. 1,2,5)
I greet Thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
My only trust and Savior of my heart,
Who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray Thee from our hearts all cares to take.
Thou art the King of mercy and of grace,
Reigning omnipotent in every place:
So come, O King, and our whole being sway;
Shine on us with the light of Thy pure day.
Our hope is in no other save in Thee;
Our faith is built upon Thy promise free;
Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure,
That in Thy strength we evermore endure.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Since all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we all are called to confess our shortcomings, trusting in God’s grace.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of transformation, we confess that we are stuck in our ways, resistant to change that would draw us closer to you and to the beloved community you intend. We refuse to hear your Spirit who calls out to us in truth. We seek freedom for ourselves, ignoring the oppression of others. Have mercy on us, O God. Forgive our waywardness, our negligence, and our inability to receive good news and act upon it. Grant that we may live our lives through the faith we have in Jesus. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Beloved, we are justified by grace through faith. In all things, our gracious God offers us salvation. Believe the good news:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION
Holy, Holy, Holy One, guide us by the Spirit of truth to hear the Word of life you speak, and to give all glory, honor, and praise to your threefold name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
:
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord, for I will forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more.
Psalm 46 (read responsively)
1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
God will help it when the morning dawns.
6 The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice; the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord;
see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations;
I am exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Romans 3:19-28
19 Now we know that, whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human will be justified before him by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed and is attested by the Law and the Prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through the faith of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to demonstrate at the present time his own righteousness, so that he is righteous and he justifies the one who has the faith of Jesus.
27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. Through what kind of law? That of works? No, rather through the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.
Keep these words in your heart. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
Thanks be to God. Deuteronomy 6:6
REFLECTION: ‘A Gift of Grace’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
*HYMN #420 (Blue) ‘God of Grace and God of Glory’ (v. 1, 4, 5)
God of grace and God of glory, on Thy people pour Thy power;
crown Thine ancient church’s story, bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
Set our feet on lofty places; gird our lives that they may be
Armored with all Christ-like graces, pledged to set all captives free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not them nor Thee!
That we fail not them nor Thee!
Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of Thy salvation be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage serving Thee whom we adore,
serving Thee whom we adore.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –THE SCOTS CONFESSION
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave, whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our trust. Who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible; one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. By whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, to have created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice have appointed, and to the manifestation of his own glory. (Chapter One, The Scots Confession, 1560)
INVITATION TO OFFERING
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, on the basis of God’s mercy, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable act of worship. Romans 12:1
*DOXOLOGY
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Precious Lord, you remind us through Scripture that we are descendants of Abraham. We, too, are sinners in need of the redemptive love provided by Jesus. We, too, are reformers just as our forefathers and foremothers understood our depravity and God’s grace. Yet, we take comfort as we are embraced in your arms and feel the warmth of your love radiating through them and God’s love in this place of worship. We prayerfully ask that these gifts benefit your children who need to be blanketed in the safety and security of your tender care. In love and gratitude, we pray. Amen.
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION FOR REFORMATION DAY
Confident in the gracious and ever-widening mercy of God, let us pray for the world, the body of Christ, and all who yearn for wholeness of life. Liberate us from our bondage to sin, God of freedom, that your church would continually be reshaped and reformed by the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Show your righteousness, God of justice, that all who are oppressed and marginalized, forgotten, and cast aside would be given voice by elected leaders and compassionate citizens.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Make wars to cease in all the world, God of peace, that all strife, violence, and bloodshed give way to reconciliation, compassion, and new life.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Take us by our hand, God of companionship, when we are paralyzed by our fears and unable to step out in boldness.
Give us courage to walk confidently with you.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Give your stillness, God of calm, to all who are facing illness, surgery, or any uncertainty of health (especially)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. HYMN ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’ – A Litany for Reformation Sunday
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
[Sung]
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.
[Sung]
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus it is He,
Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; God speaks and the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the Lord! God makes wars cease to the end of the earth; God breaks the bow, shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.
[Sung]
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
Be still, and know that the Lord is God! God is exalted among the nations; God is exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
[Sung]
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth;
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.
