SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Reformation and All Saints Observed
October 31, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin that clings so closely
And let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
Gather us together this Reformation Sunday, O God, that we may celebrate the witness of our forefathers and foremothers and the courage that gave birth to the Reformation.
Teach us how to honor the saints of God in ages past as well as in our present days.
May the conviction of your grace written on their hearts be one that forms our own faith.
Inspire us in the continuing reformation of the church and be present to us in your word and sacraments. Come let us worship God!
*HYMN #624 (red) ‘I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art’ (verses 1, 3, 5)
I greet Thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
My only trust and Savior of my heart,
Who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray Thee from our hearts all cares to take.
Thou art the life, by which alone we live,
And all our substance and our strength receive;
Sustain us by Thy faith and by Thy power,
And give us strength in every trying hour.
Our hope is in no other save in Thee;
Our faith is built upon Thy promise free;
Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure,
That in Thy strength we evermore endure.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, you built your church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as cornerstone. Join us together by their teaching, so that we may be a holy temple in whom your Spirit dwells, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Let us put aside our good works and remember that we do sin and fall short of the glory of God. As Living Saints, let us confess our sin together saying:
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, you call us to love you with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind.
Forgive us when selfishness takes up too much of our heart, when worry seems to crowd wonder out of our soul, when fear causes us to close our minds to anything new.
Holy God, you call us to bear with one another in love.
Forgive us when we cannot love our neighbors.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
God does show us God’s own righteousness, and divine forbearance. Through the work of the Holy Spirit given to us, may we come to know the truth and be made free as did the Reformers and Saints who have gone before us also knew…Jesus Christ the Son of God sets us free. Our sins are forgiven. God of our refuge and strength…have mercy on us, write this on our hearts. Amen.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.
Our Savior Christ Jesus abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
II Timothy 1:10
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Revelations 21:1-6a
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
“See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.”
5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.
A TIME FOR CHILDREN
Mark 12:28-34
28 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; 33 and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1
Thanks be to God.
REFLECTION: “The Greatest Commandment” Rev. Norlita Kaul
*HYMN: #366 (red) ‘Love Divine, All Loves Excelling’
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down,
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art.
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit,
Let us find the promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty, to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive.
Suddenly return, and never,
Nevermore Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee.
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
REMEMBERING THE SAINTS
(Litany, names read of those that passed 11/20 – Oct 31, 2021)
Let us pray together. Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses—
Patriarchs and matriarchs, prophets and psalmists, disciples and evangelists, martyrs and saints.
We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to live, who followed, obeyed, adored you—our grateful hymn we sing.
Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses.
Loved ones now resting in you, who guided us, nurtured and cared for us; ancestors who worked and traveled, lived and died that we might be who we are, where we are—your precious children in this community of believers.
We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to die, who counted you their great reward, accept our thankful cry.
Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses--
Family members/loved ones and members of this congregation; fellow believers in every country, every denomination; friends who help, guide and uplift us—children of your family, sheep of your fold, saints of your redeeming.
We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For this, your name we bless, and humbly pray anew, that we like them in holiness may live and die in you.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,
And let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
Looking to Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
Amen.
(while candles are being lit, sing this song)
*HYMN: #438 (red) ‘Rock of Ages Cleft for Me’
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Cleanse from guilt and make me pure.
Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eye lids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
INVITATION TO OFFERING

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
