SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Baptism of Our Lord Sunday
January 9, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
I am with you, says the Lord.
Do not fear.
I have called you by name.
Do not fear.
You are mine.
Do not be afraid.
*HYMN #375 (Red) ‘Shall We Gather at the River’
Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day. [Refrain]
Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown. [Refrain]
Soon we'll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace. [Refrain]
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Holy God, you sent your Son to be baptized among sinners, to seek and save the lost. May we, who have been baptized in his name, never turn away from the world, but reach out in love to rescue the wayward; by the mercy of Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Ever ready with cleansing love, God invites our confession, offering mercy and strength so that we may start anew.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
In the waters of baptism, O God, you have cleansed us and claimed us. Forgive us for refusing your grace and rejecting your name. We have followed our own paths, and they have led us far from you. Help us to live into our baptisms, to trust that all we need is in you, for you have marked us as your own, loving us without limit. Wash us with your love again, that with clean hearts we my go in the way of Jesus.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The love of God flows ceaselessly. The mercy of God never ends.
This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Saving God, source of our calling, your Word is full of power and glory.
Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us so that we may receive your grace
and live as your beloved children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Speak to us, Lord, for your servants are listening. 1 Samuel 3:9–10
SPECIAL MUSIC ‘I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry’ Rev. Kaul
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 43:1-7
1 But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
4 Because you are precious in my sight,
and honored, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east,
and from the west I will gather you;
6 I will say to the north, “Give them up,”
and to the south, “Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth--
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”
HYMN: #156 (Red) ‘Sing of God Made Manifest’ (verse 1 & 2)
Sing of God made manifest in a child robust and blest,
to whose home in Bethlehem where a star had guided them,
magi came and gifts unbound, signs mysterious and profound;
myrrh and frankincense and gold, grave and God and king foretold.
Sing of God made manifest when at Jordan John confessed,
“I should be baptized by you, but your bidding I will do.”
Then from heaven a double sign--dove-like Spirit, voice divine--
hailed the true Anointed One: “This is my beloved Son.”
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
A new teaching, with authority!
Thanks be to God. Mark 1:27
REFLECTION: ‘Saved to Serve’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN #482 (Red) ‘Baptized in Water’
Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
cleansed by the blood of Christ our King:
heirs of salvation, trusting the promise,
faithfully now God's praises we sing.
Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
dead in the tomb with Christ our King:
one with his rising, freed and forgiven,
thankfully now God's praises we sing.
Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
marked with the sign of Christ our King:
born of the Spirit, we are God’s children,
joyfully now God's praises we sing.
REAFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM FOR CONGREGATION
Sentence of Scriptures:
“God has told you what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8
The Renunciation:
Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?
I do.
Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love?
I do.
Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?
I will, with God’s help.
Profession of Faith:
With the whole church, let us confess our faith.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Thanksgiving for Baptism
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Remember your baptism and be thankful.
Sharing God’s Peace
The Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

1 Corinthians 8:4–6
SPECIAL MUSIC Mary Ermel, organist
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Sovereign God, we remember that becoming part of a Christian community was not a meaningless dedication but a call to be devoted openly to you. The sacrament of baptism is a reminder of all that we have received and all that we are asked to give. Like the heavenly voice you shared with your beloved son, we listen anew for your guidance and direction. Multiply these financial gifts so others may be baptized in your Precious Name. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #475 (Red) ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’
Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of God's unchanging love!
Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I've come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee:
prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above.
