SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
24th Sunday after Pentecost/Communion/Confirmation
November 7, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Come worship God,
who gives food to the hungry and sets the prisoner free.
Come worship God,
who gives life to the lifeless and sets our hearts aflame.
Come worship God,
and bring your gifts before the One who is their source.
*HYMN #155 (blue) ‘Rejoice the Lord is King’
Rejoice, the Lord is King!
Your Lord and King adore!
Rejoice, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore.
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
God’s kingdom cannot fail,
Christ rules o'er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell
Are to our Jesus given:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
Rejoice in glorious hope!
For Christ, the Judge shall come
To glorify the saints
For their eternal home:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Holy God, in Christ you have revealed the true measure of your generosity and the great treasure of your grace. Move us, even in the poverty of our hearts, to offer everything we have to you, so that our lives may bear witness to the abundance of your love; through Jesus Christ our redeemer. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
The prophet speaks of the coming light of God which calls all the people of the earth to come together in God’s realm of shalom. Let us confess the ways in which we have rejected God’s vision of wholeness.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O Christ, you praised the gift of the widow, who had so little and gave it all. Forgive us, O Christ, for turning our eyes away from people who are trapped in poverty. Forgive us, O Christ, for turning our resources into reasons for pride or greed. Forgive us, O Christ, and by your forgiveness, teach us to follow in your way of generosity.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Lift up your eyes and see the grace of God poured out into your lives. The light of God shines through the darkness. Our hearts rejoice for Christ is in our midst. We are forgiven and freed!
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
O God who is greater than the most powerful forces in this world, enable us to be still and know that You are God.
O Lord who answers out of the whirlwind of everyday life, breathe in us Your Holy Spirit to strengthen, comfort, and guide us in the midst of the storm.
O still, small voice, speak to us this hour that we might become makers of Your peace in our homes, in our communities, in our world. We pray all this in the name of the One who calls us to love and serve. Amen.
Watch and be ready, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
Matthew 24:42,44
SCRIPTURE READINGS
1 King 17:8-16
8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9 “Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10 So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” 11 As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13 Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” 15 She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
Mark 12:38-44
38 As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40 They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Luke 21:28
Thanks be to God.
REFLECTION: “The Greatest Gift” Rev. Norlita Kaul
SPECIAL MUSIC --"Baptism Blessing" Donna F, soloist and Mary E, pianist
REAFFIRMATION OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT –
CONFIRMATION OF GAYLE F
This service is for those who were baptized as infants and nurtured in the
church, and who now are making a public profession of faith.
PRESENTATION
(An elder, representing the SESSION, presents the candidate)
Gayle F is presented by the session, for the reaffirming of the baptismal covenant into which she was baptized. She now desires to profess publicly her faith and to assume greater responsibility in the life of the church, and God’s mission in the world.
Rev. Kaul: We rejoice that you now desire to declare your faith and to share with us in our common ministry. In baptism you were joined to Christ.
In the community of the people of God, you have learned of God’s purpose for you and for all creation. You have been nurtured and are now called to witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Hear these words from Holy Scripture:
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light so shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
PROFESSION OF FAITH
Now, as you publicly declare your faith, I ask you to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which you were baptized.
RENUNCIATIONS:
Do you renounce all evil, and powers in the world
which defy God’s righteousness and love?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that separate you from the love of God?
I renounce them.
Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior?
I do.
Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love, to your life’s end?
I will, with God’s help.
PROFESSION
With the whole church, let us confess our faith using the Apostles’ Creed p.14 in the hymnal;
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
You have publicly professed your faith. Will you devote yourself to the church’s teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.
Let us pray.
Gracious God, by water and the Spirit you claimed us as your own, cleansing us from sin, and giving us new life. You made us members of your body, the church, calling us to be your servants in the world. Renew in Gayle, the covenant you made in her baptism. Continue the good work you have begun in her. Send her forth in the power of your Spirit to love and serve you with joy, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
HYMN #302 (blue) ‘I Danced in the Morning’
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth;
At Bethlehem I had My birth.
Refrain:
Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He,
I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He.
I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance, and they would not follow Me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and for John;
They came with Me and the dance went on. [Refrain]
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame:
The holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung Me high,
And they left Me there on a cross to die. [Refrain]
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried My body and they thought I'd gone;
But I am the Dance and I still go on. [Refrain]
They cut me down and I leap up high;
I am the life that will never, never die;
I'll live in you if you'll live in Me:
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He. [Refrain]
LAYING ON OF HANDS
(The minister and Elders lay hands on the head of the candidate while offering the following prayer. The sign of the cross may be marked on the forehead of the candidate.)
Defend, O Lord, your servant Gayle, with your heavenly grace, that she may continue yours forever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more, until she comes to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.
Ever-living God, guard this your servant with your protecting hand, and let your Holy Spirit be with her forever. Lead her to know and obey your Word, that she may serve you in this life and dwell with you forever in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
WELCOME
(A representative of the SESSION addresses the congregation:)
Gayle, by publicly professing your faith, and having expressed you intention to continue in the covenant God made with you in your baptism, We welcome you. Let all of us welcome her as she joins with us in the worship and mission of this church.
(The people respond, saying:)
With joy and thanksgiving, we welcome you to share with us in the ministry of Christ, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
There is only one Lord and God from whom all things come and for whom we live. Let us offer our lives to the Lord.
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Forgiving God, people give for so many reasons—guilt, joy, obligation, gratitude, obedience, hope, control, thankfulness. Remind us of your call to examine everything that we have; after all, our money and possessions are really gifts from you. You call us to use them wisely—to share them openly—to give them generously. So thank you for this celebration of giving. Receive this offering and release us from the foolish temptation to believe that it is best spent on ourselves. Amen.
Mark 12:38-44 David S. Bell
INVITATION TO THE LORD’S SUPPER
The Lord’s Table is set for us. All who would trust in Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Holy God, we praise you. Let the heavens be joyful and the earth be glad. We bless you for creating the whole world, for your promises to your people Israel and for Jesus Christ in whom your fullness dwells. Born of Mary, he shares our life. Eating with sinners, he welcomes us. Guiding his children, he leads us. Visiting the sick, he heals us. Dying on the cross, he saves us. Risen from the dead, he gives new life. Living with you, he prays for us. Let us join our voices with the choirs of angels and with the faithful of every time and place saying to the glory of your name:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
With thanksgiving we take this bread and this cup, proclaiming the death and resurrection of our Lord. Receive our sacrifice of praise, O God. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and this, so it may be a communion in the body and blood of our Lord. Make us one with Christ, and with all who share this feast. Unite us in faith, encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, that we may serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory. We praise you, eternal God, through Christ, your Word made flesh in the holy and life-giving Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
Let us continue to remember those who have specifically asked us to pray for them on our ongoing prayer list.

*HYMN #379 (blue) ‘My Hope is Built on Nothing Less’
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain]
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain]
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found,
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain]

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*HYMN #379 (blue) ‘My Hope is Built on Nothing Less’
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain]
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain]
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found,
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain]
