                                                       SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
                                                       23rd Sunday After Pentecost
                                                             Honoring Veterans
                                                             November 13, 2022

PRELUDE

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP
Surely God is our salvation;
     we will trust, and will not be afraid,
for the Lord God is our strength and our might;
     God has become our salvation.
Sing praises to the Lord, for God has done gloriously;
     let this be known in all the earth.

*HYMN #761 (Red) ‘Called as Partners in Christ’s Service’
     Called as partners in Christ’s service, called to ministries of grace,
     we respond with deep commitment fresh new lines of faith to trace.
     May we learn the art of sharing, side by side and friend with friend,
     equal partners in our caring to fulfill God’s chosen end.

     Christ’s example, Christ’s inspiring, Christ’s clear call to work and worth,
     let us follow, never faltering, reconciling folk on earth.
     Men and women, richer, poorer, all God’s people, young and old,
     blending human skills together gracious gifts from God unfold.

     Thus new patterns for Christ’s mission, in a small or global sense,
     help us bear each other’s burdens breaking down each wall or fence.
     Words of comfort, words of vision, words of challenge, said with care,
     bring new power and strength for action, make us colleagues, free and fair.

     So God grant us for tomorrow ways to order human life
     that surround each person’s sorrow with a calm that conquers strife.
     Make us partners in our living, our compassion to increase,
     messengers of faith, thus giving hope and confidence and peace.

CALL TO CONFESSION
Before we call, God answers us. While we are still speaking, God hears us.
Let us confess our sin to God, who even now is waiting to say, “I forgive you.”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Majestic Creator, we fail to believe we carry your image and we fail to behave as those who belong to you. Mighty Savior, we turn from your path of sacrificial love and we turn toward our personal preferences. Merciful Spirit, we forget your call to righteousness and we forget our need of you. In our sinfulness, triune God, we seek now your forgiveness, praying that you will relieve the burden of our regrets by the power of your patient love.                          (Silent reflection)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
God is creating new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered. They shall not even cross God’s mind. Be glad and rejoice forever in what God is creating: newness of life.
     In Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God and to one another. Alleluia!

*GLORIA PATRI
         Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
         As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
         World without end. Amen, Amen.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION
Sovereign God, let your Word rule in our hearts and your Spirit govern our lives until at last we see the fulfillment of your realm of justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
:
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
                                                                   Deuteronomy 6:4

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 98   (read responsively)  (The Message)
1 Sing to God a brand-new song.
He’s made a world of wonders!
He rolled up his sleeves,
He set things right.
 2 God made history with salvation,
He showed the world what he could do.
 3 He remembered to love us, a bonus
To his dear family, Israel—indefatigable love.
The whole earth comes to attention.
Look—God’s work of salvation!
 4 Shout your praises to God, everybody!
Let loose and sing! Strike up the band!
 5 Round up an orchestra to play for God,
Add on a hundred-voice choir.
 6 Feature trumpets and big trombones,
Fill the air with praises to King God.
 7 Let the sea and its fish give a round of applause,
With everything living on earth joining in.
 8 Let ocean breakers call out, “Encore!”
And mountains harmonize the finale--
 9 A tribute to God when he comes,
When he comes to set the earth right.
He’ll straighten out the whole world,
He’ll put the world right, and everyone in it.

Isaiah 65:17-25  (The Message)
17-25 “Pay close attention now:
    I’m creating new heavens and a new earth.
All the earlier troubles, chaos, and pain
    are things of the past, to be forgotten.
Look ahead with joy.
    Anticipate what I’m creating:
I’ll create Jerusalem as sheer joy,
    create my people as pure delight.
I’ll take joy in Jerusalem,
    take delight in my people:
No more sounds of weeping in the city,
    no cries of anguish;
No more babies dying in the cradle,
    or old people who don’t enjoy a full lifetime;
One-hundredth birthdays will be considered normal--
    anything less will seem like a cheat.
They’ll build houses
    and move in.
They’ll plant fields
    and eat what they grow.
No more building a house
    that some outsider takes over,
No more planting fields
    that some enemy confiscates,
For my people will be as long-lived as trees,
    my chosen ones will have satisfaction in their work.
They won’t work and have nothing come of it,
    they won’t have children snatched out from under them.
For they themselves are plantings blessed by God,
    with their children and grandchildren likewise God-blessed.
Before they call out, I’ll answer.
    Before they’ve finished speaking, I’ll have heard.
 Wolf and lamb will graze the same meadow,
    lion and ox eat straw from the same trough,
    but snakes—they’ll get a diet of dirt!
Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill
    anywhere on my Holy Mountain,” says God.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here I am; send me!” Amen.     (Isaiah 6:8)

REFLECTION: ‘God’s Promises’                     Rev. Norlita Kaul

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –
Jesus Christ is God with humankind. He is the eternal Son of the Father, who became human and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. He is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. This work of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, humanity, and the world. Therefore, the church calls all people to be reconciled to God and to one another.
                                        (Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.07.)

HONORING OUR VETERANS
We remember today, O God, all those who have served under the colors of their countries.
          We commend them to you for their bravery, their patriotism, and their honor.
Grant that those who serve today may be kept in your everlasting love and protection.
          Give comfort and encouragement to their families.
We pray for the day when there will be peace on earth and the kingdoms of this world will have become the kingdoms of our Christ.
          Hasten that day, O God, and help us to live in that hope. Fill us with your spirit of love and forgiveness, in order that                 we may understand the nature of Christ’s kingdom.
Hear our prayers for our world, that it may come to Christ’s will for all nations and become a better world community. May God’s peace reign supreme.
          Let your holy will prevail  among all people, and your name be exalted forever. Amen.

HYMN #564 (Blue) “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”
     O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,
     for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
     America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
     and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

     O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern, impassioned stress
     a thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness!
     America! America! God mend thine every flaw.
     Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

     O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
     who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!
     America! America! May God thy gold refine
     till all success be nobleness, and every gain divine!

     O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
     thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
     America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
     and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

INVITATION TO OFFERING
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to present yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. Let us offer our lives to the Lord.                                                                                                    Romans 12:1

*DOXOLOGY
     Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
     Praise Him, all creatures here below;
     Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
     Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.   Amen

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Exalted Lord, how can we sufficiently prepare our hearts to stay firm in your love? We praise your name with songs and prayers, yet are we truly ready to stand on your promises and risk persecution for being a fully committed Christian? Are we devout to your will by the way we live and give? Our offertory response is one means of answering those questions. Thank you for this opportunity to dedicate these gifts as we become bold in our faith and slow in our judgment. Let your stream of living water flow from our lips as we share your Good News. Amen. (Luke 21:5-19 David S. Bell)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*HYMN #8 (Red) ‘Eternal Father, Strong to Save’
     Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm has bound the restless wave,
     who bade the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep;
     O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

     O Savior, whose almighty word the winds and waves submissive heard,
     who walked upon the foaming deep, and calm amid the rage did sleep;
     O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

     O Holy Spirit, who did brood upon the chaos wild and rude,
     and bade its angry tumult cease, and give for fierce confusion, peace;
     O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.

     O Trinity of love and power, all travelers guide in danger's hour;
     from rock and tempest, fire, and foe, protect them where-so-e'er they go;
     Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee glad praise from air and land and sea.
