SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
HONORING VETERANS/THANKSGIVING SUNDAY
25th Sunday after Pentecost
November 14, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Let us worship God, our source of life.
God awakens us from the dust of the earth.
Let us worship God, our sovereign protector.
God is at our right hand, and we shall not be moved.
Let us worship God with hearts that are glad,
for in God’s presence there is fullness of joy.
*HYMN #559 (blue) ‘We Gather Together’
We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His name; He forgets not His own.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, wast at our side; all glory be Thine!
We all do extol Thee, Thou leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our defender wilt be.
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Eternal God, as human kingdoms crumble and earthly temples turn to dust, you remain faithful: our rock and salvation. Build us up, help us to persevere as the temple of your Spirit so that we may stand firm in hope and faith; through Jesus Christ our cornerstone and Lord. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
We long to be faithful stewards of your abundant grace. Many times our efforts fail. We sing and fall short of God’s glory in us. Therefore, let us confess our sins together.
Thanks be to God!
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
You are the God of all people, O Lord, the creator of all things good. Forgive us when we fail to see the good. Forgive us when we refuse to see the “all.” We are searching for your presence and grasping for your grace, unable to believe that we cannot be separated from your love. Forgive us, God of mercy, and through Christ our redeemer, free us to try again.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10
We are forgiven and generously so.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
O God, the Three in One, you draw us into your community of love with people across the ages and around the world. By the same Spirit that binds us together, speak to us that what we read and ponder may enliven us and stretch us to trust and follow you; through Christ our Savior. Amen.
Look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Luke 21:28
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 16:7-11 (read responsively)
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
TIME FOR CHILDREN
Hebrews 10:11-25
11 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” 13 and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds,”
17 he also adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, for great in our midst is the Holy One. Isaiah 12:6
Thanks be to God.
REFLECTION: “A Community of Love” Rev. Norlita Kaul
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
HONORING OUR VETERANS
We remember today, O God, all those who have served under the colors of their countries.
We commend them to you for their bravery, their patriotism, and their honor.
Grant that those who serve today may be kept in your everlasting love and protection.
Give comfort and encouragement to their families.
We pray for the day when there will be peace on earth and the kingdoms of this world will have become the kingdoms of our Christ.
Hasten that day, O God, and help us to live in that hope. Fill us with your spirit of love and forgiveness, in order that we may understand the nature of Christ’s kingdom.
Hear our prayers for our world, that it may come to Christ’s will for all nations and become a better world community. May God’s peace reign supreme.
Let your holy will prevail among all people, and your name be exalted forever. Amen.
HYMN #564 (blue) “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with servanthood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with servanthood
From sea to shining sea!
INVITATION TO OFFERING

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Father God, we watch the news and believe that you were speaking to our time when you spoke privately to the disciples on the Mount of Olives. You caution us not to be lead astray. We are trying, Lord, to keep our eyes fixed on you. We have worshipped you in song and prayer. We have listened for your Word. Now, we humbly place before you these offerings and tithes. May our resolve be strong to do your will and follow your path. For the sake of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #551 (blue) ‘Come Ye Thankful People Come’
Come, ye thankful people, come,
Raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in,
Ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide
For our wants to be supplied;
Come to God's own temple, come,
Raise the song of harvest home.
All the world is God's own field,
Fruit unto God’s praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown
Unto joy or sorrow grown;
First the blade, and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.
For the Lord our God shall come,
And shall take the harvest home;
From each field shall in that day
All offenses purge away,
Give the angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast;
But the fruitful ears to store
In God’s garner evermore.
Even so, Lord, quickly come,
Bring Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in,
Free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified,
In Thy presence to abide;
Come, with all Thine angels, come,
Raise the glorious harvest home.
