SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
12-13-2020
PRELUDE/SPECIAL MUSIC “We Need a Silent Night in Here” Donna Flint
WELCOME
OPENING HYMN: “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus”
Come, Thou long expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.
Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
CALL TO WORSHIP
We gather in this holy place to bear witness to the Light.
The love of God shines upon us and reveals the truth of God’s mercy.
We gather in this holy place to bear witness to the Truth.
The truth of our gospel is good news for the oppressed and a balm for the brokenhearted.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
God of our salvation, you straighten the winding ways of our hearts and smooth the paths made rough by sin. Keep our conduct blameless, keep our hearts watchful in holiness, and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near; your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING READING, WEEK THREE
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Those who lived in a land of deep darkness, on them light has shined.
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night.
The angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.”
(As the candles are lit, a bell rings, reminding and calling us to worship and thank God for sending us a Savior.)
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say,
“Come Lord Jesus!”
CALL TO CONFESSION
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the oppressed. (Isaiah 61:1)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Your love is good news for the oppressed, O Lord, and you bind up the brokenhearted. Forgive us, O God, when we think that your good news is only for us. Forgive us, O God, when we twist your gospel into something that fits comfortably into our lives. By your light, let us see you leading us beyond ourselves and into the world you love. By your grace, forgive us, and free us to try again.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Every valley is lifted up; every mountain, made low. Now the glory of the Lord is revealed, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA (please stand)
Gloria in excelsis Deo;
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy God, our hope and strength, by the power of your Spirit prepare the way in our hearts for the coming of your Word, so that we may see the glorious signs of your promise fulfilled; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A voice is crying in the wilderness: Listen to the word of the Lord.
(Mark 1:3; John 1:23)
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
1The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to the prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion--
to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins,
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
8 For I the Lord love justice,
I hate robbery and wrongdoing;
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their descendants shall be known among the nations,
and their offspring among the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge
that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil. 23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.
HYMN: "You Shall Go Out with Joy" (insert)
You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth before you; there'll be shouts of joy, and all the trees of the field will clap, will clap their hands. And all the trees of the field will clap their hands; the trees of the field will clap their hands ; the trees of the field will clap their hands while you go out with joy.
Heaven and earth will pass away but the word of the Lord stands forever.
Thanks be to God.
(Isaiah 40:8; Mark 13:31)
REFLECTION: “Rejoice O Tannenbaum” Rev. Norlita Kaul
AFFIRMATION –
God expressed love for all humankind through Israel, whom God chose to be a covenant people to serve him in love and faithfulness. When Israel was unfaithful, God disciplined the nation with judgment and maintained the covenant through prophets, priests, teachers, and true believers. These witnesses called all Israelites to a destiny in which they would serve God faithfully and become a light to the nations. The same witnesses proclaimed the coming of a new age, and a true servant of God in whom God’s purpose would be realized.
(Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.18)

As we prepare for the birth of your son, we share our tithes and offerings with the joy and excitement that is common as one anticipates the birth of a new child. Bless these gifts in your Holy Name. Amen.
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-24, David S. Bell)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
FPC: HYMN “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly”
Infant holy, Infant lowly, for His bed a cattle stall;
Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging, angels singing, noels ringing,
Tidings bringing; Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Flocks are sleeping; shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new;
Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true.
Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing
Greet the morrow; Christ the babe was born for you.
