CALL TO CONFESSION                                                                                     Rev. Kaul

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lover of justice, Giver of mercy, you call us to share our bread with the hungry and to open our homes to the homeless, to care for the poor and to satisfy the needs of those who suffer.  Some of your commandments are easy to follow; others require so much of us! How can we break the chains of injustice and untie the cords of oppression? When we consider the brokenness of our world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed.  Forgive us when we use our sense of helplessness as an excuse.  Remind us, we pray, that you are at work in and through us to bring about your reign.  Free us from fear and stir our hearts toward a greater generosity, that we might be the salt and light you have called us to be.            (Time for silent reflection)

              (read responsively)
1 Praise the Lord!
    Happy are those who fear the Lord,
    who greatly delight in his commandments.
       2 Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
           the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures forever.
       4 They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright;
           they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.
5 It is well with those who deal generously and lend,
    who conduct their affairs with justice.
       6 For the righteous will never be moved;
          they will be remembered forever.
7 They are not afraid of evil tidings;
    their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord.
       8 Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid;
           in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
9 They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever;
    their horn is exalted in honor.
       10 The wicked see it and are angry;
           they gnash their teeth and melt away;
           the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind.  Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love.                                               Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.15
