SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Transfiguration Sunday
February 27, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Come, let us worship God,
singing joyful songs of praise!
For the glory of the Lord shines upon us,
and calls us forth with thanksgiving.
Let us turn to the mountaintop,
and let us give God the glory.
Come, let us worship God!
*HYMN #193 (Red) ‘Jesus Takes Us to the Mountain’
Jesus, take us to the mountain,
where, with Peter, James, and John,
we are dazzled by your glory,
light as blinding as the sun
There prepare us for the night
by the vision of that sight.
What do you want us to see there,
that your close companions saw?
Your divinity revealed there
fills us with the self-same awe.
Clothed in flesh like ours you go,
matched to meet our deadliest foe.
What do you want you to hear there,
that your dear disciples heard?
Once again the voice from heaven
says of the Incarnate Word,
“Listen, listen, everyone:
this is my beloved Son.”
Take us to that other mountain
where we see you glorified,
where you shouted “It is finished!”
where for all the world you died.
Hear the stunned centurion:
“Truly this was God’s own Son!”
We who have beheld your glory,
risen and ascended Lord,
cannot help but tell the story,
all that we have seen and heard;
say with Peter, James, and John:
“You are God’s beloved Son!”
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, glorious and faithful, to those who seek you with a sincere heart you reveal the beauty of your face. Strengthen us in faith to embrace the mystery of the cross, and open our hearts to its transfiguring power; that, clinging in love to your will for us, we may walk the path of discipleship as followers of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
We all fall short of our call as beloved children of God. Yet, in hope and with boldness we confess our sin together, trusting that we will be heard in God’s great mercy.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy Lord, we confess that we do not always seek the light of your way. We are satisfied to dwell in darkness, holding fast to the comforts of material fortune. We ignore the needs of others, and selfishly look the other way when our neighbors are oppressed. In your merciful way, help us to establish your equity in the world. Move us to protect creation and ensure equality, that all of our siblings may have a share of your abundance and the safety of your peace, and that the light of your face may shine upon all creation. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The Lord our God answers our prayers. The Holy One forgives us of our sin. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
HYMN #458 (Red) ‘Thy Word is a Lamp Unto My Feet’ (refrain only) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Exodus 34:29-35
29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; 34 but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
Luke 9:28-36
28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.
HYMN #458 (Red) ‘Thy Word is a Lamp Unto My Feet’ (refrain only)
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
REFLECTION: ‘Listen to Him’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
SPECIAL MUSIC #192 (Red) ‘Shine, Jesus, Shine’
(Rev. Kaul sings verses, congregation joins in on chorus)
Lord, the light of your love is shining,
in the midst of the darkness, shining;
Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us;
set us free by the trust you now bring us.
Shine on me; shine on me.
Shine, Jesus, shine; fill this land with the Father’s glory.
Blaze, Spirit, blaze; set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow; flood the nations with grace and mercy.
Send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light.
Lord, I come to your awesome presence,
from the shadows into your radiance;
by the blood I may enter your brightness.
Search me; try me; consume all my darkness.
As we gaze on your kingly brightness,
so our faces display your likeness;
ever changing from glory to glory;
mirrored here may our lives tell your story.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH--APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
God of shining splendor, your voice makes the earth tremble in wonder. Overshadow us with your Spirit so that we may hear your Word and live as faithful disciples and covenant people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
HYMN: #450 (Red) ‘Be Thou My Vision’
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord.
thou my soul’s shelter, and thou my high tower;
raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise;
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Gracious God, like Moses, we often seem veiled in our daily lives when given an opportunity to share your splendor. Our minds become focused on the temporal and the materialistic. We ashamedly view the world as our kingdom and not your kingdom. Lift the veils on our souls so our thoughts and deeds are transformed from any selfish desire to your calling and vision. We offer ourselves to you here and now. Amen.

*HYMN #772 (Red) ‘Live into Hope’
Live into hope of captives freed,
of sight regained, the end of greed.
The oppressed shall be the first to see
the year of God’s own jubilee!
Live into hope! The blind shall see
with insight and with clarity,
removing shades of pride and fear,
a vision of our God brought near.
Live into hope of liberty,
the right to speak, the right to be,
the right to have one’s daily bread,
to hear God’s word and thus be fed.
Live into hope of captive freed
from chains of fear or want or greed.
God now proclaims our full release
to faith and hope and joy and peace.
