LENTEN CANDLES PRAYER
Leader: God has proven trustworthy throughout history, but at times, we question and doubt, even deny God’s presence in our lives. We forget the larger picture and focus only on a single moment, on that period of time, when we experience God’s absence. We worry and fret about what is happening, or what will happen next, rather than trusting in our Savior. We extinguish this candle as a symbol of our faith in Jesus Christ, that his presence is with us and that we are not alone.
All: God of hope, help us to remember the promise that you will never leave us or forsake us. As we journey towards the cross this Lent, remind us of your presence and help us to remember to place our trust in you. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
The reconciling work of Jesus was the supreme crisis in the life of humankind. His cross and resurrection become personal crisis and present hope for women and men when the gospel is proclaimed and believed. In this experience, the Spirit brings God’s forgiveness to all, moves people to respond in faith, repentance, and obedience, and initiates the new life in Christ.
Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.21
Psalm 121
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills--
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and forevermore.
