                                                               ORDER OF WORSHIP
                                                                 4th Sunday in Lent
                                                                      March 19, 2023

PRELUDE

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP   (in unison)
 Lord God of Light, shine in our hearts. Show us who we truly are and forgive us the sins that keep us from seeing you. Open our eyes to your ways and give us courage to live as you have called us. For the sake of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

*OPENING HYMN  #263 (Blue) ‘Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise’
     Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
     In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
     Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
     Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

     Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
     Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
     Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
     Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

     To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
     In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
     We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
     Then wither and perish; but naught changeth Thee.

     Thou reignest in glory, Thou rulest in light,
     Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
     All praise we would render; O help us to see
     'Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

CALL TO CONFESSION
How do we know when our actions are right?
     When the fruits of our labors are good and true.
Christ is the light that exposes all we keep hidden, but offers us healing and renewal instead of judgment.
Therefore, let us hold up our sins to Jesus.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)
God of compassion and mercy, we sometimes fail to see what you are doing in the world. We want you to act in ways we predict, but we forget: you do what is good, not what is expected. Forgive us when we do not recognize your miracles.
Forgive us when we doubt the wisdom of your actions. Most of all, forgive us when we do not respond to your call, ignoring what we need to do to show the world your love and grace.   (silent reflection)

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE AND FORGIVENESS
Jesus restores our souls and leads us in right paths for his name’s sake.
     Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives,
     and we will dwell in the house of the Lord our whole lives long.

*GLORIA PATRI
         Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
         and to the Holy Ghost.
         As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
         world without end. Amen, Amen.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION
Lord, please open our hearts and minds to hear what you have to tell us in your word. Amen.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Psalm 51:15

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 61:1-3
1 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me
    because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
    to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
    and release to the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
    and the day of vengeance of our God,
    to comfort all who mourn,
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.

Collection of selected Psalms, Isaiah 61:10, & II Chronicles 6:41 (read responsively)
     -You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy that my heart may sing your             praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.  (Psalm 30:11,12)
 -Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. (Psalm 33:1)
     -Let everything that hath breath, praise the Lord. (Psalm 150:6)
 -Praise the Lord, my soul; Lord my God, you are very great, you are clothed with honor and majesty. (Psalm 104:1)
      - The Lord reigns, he is clothed with majesty. The Lord is clothed with strength. (Psalm 93:1)
 -The Lord wraps himself with light as with a garment. (Psalm 104:2)
      -I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with the garments of salvation and                 arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness. (Isaiah 61:10)
 -May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy. (Psalm 132:9)
      -I will also clothe her priests with salvation and her faithful people will ever sing for joy. (Psalm 132:16)
 -May your priests, Lord God, be clothed with salvation. (II Chronicles 6:41)

Colossians 3:12-14
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord[a] has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

We proclaim Christ crucified— the wisdom and power of God.
     Thanks be to God.                                            1 Corinthians 1:23–25

SERMON  ‘What are You Wearing”                              Lee Peterson, pulpit supply

Psalm 150 read by Lee P & Dolores C. (NIV & Message)
1 Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
    praise him in his mighty firmament!
2 Praise him for his mighty deeds;
    praise him according to his surpassing greatness!
 3 Praise him with trumpet sound;
    praise him with lute and harp!
4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;
    praise him with strings and pipe!
5 Praise him with clanging cymbals;
    praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH -THE APOSTLES’ CREED  (in unison)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

*SERMON HYMN   #485 (Blue) ‘To God be the Glory’
     To God be the glory, great things He hath done!
     So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
     Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
     And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

     Refrain:
          Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
          Let the earth hear His voice!
          Praise the Lord, praise the Lord!
          Let the people rejoice!
          O come to the Father through Jesus the Son
          and give Him the glory, great things He hath done!

     Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
     And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
     But purer, and higher, and greater will be
     Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. [Refrain]

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.

CLOSING HYMN #482 (Blue) ‘Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty’
     Praise ye the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
     O my soul, praise him, for He is thy health and salvation!
     All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
     Join me in glad adoration!

     Praise ye the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth;
     Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
     Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
     Granted in what He ordaineth?

     Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
     All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
     Let the amen sound from His people again;
     Gladly for aye we adore Him.
