SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
3rd Sunday in Lent
March 20, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Thirsty, our hearts crave living water.
Hungry, our souls ache to be satisfied.
Weary, our minds are tired by thoughts
that do not come from God.
Thirsty, hungry, and weary,
let us worship the God of love.
*HYMN #435 (Red) ‘There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy’
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
like the wideness of the sea.
There’s a kindness in God’s justice,
which is more than liberty.
There is no place where earth’s sorrows
are more felt than up in heaven.
There is no place where earth’s failings
have such kindly judgment given.
For the love of God is broader
than the measures of the mind.
And the heart of the Eternal
is most wonderfully kind.
If our love were but more faithful,
we would gladly trust God’s Word,
and our lives reflect thanksgiving
for the goodness of our Lord.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Merciful God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
When the time comes to repent, let us not accuse our neighbor, but face the truth within us, and not to belittle or shame, but to seek grace, that we can turn our lives around with God’s help.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, though you lovingly tend us, we have not put forth the good fruits of your Spirit. Our consumption poisons the earth. Our violence threatens our neighbors. Our greed exploits the poor. We must seem a waste of time, but don’t give up on us yet, O God. In your power to abundantly pardon, forgive us for the sake of Christ, and imbue us with love, peace, goodness, and faithfulness.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Incline your ear and listen, so that you may live! God makes with us an everlasting covenant, the sure, steadfast love known to Moses, David, and the ancestors and revealed in Jesus upon the cross. Trust in the good news.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
THE LENTEN CANDLE: The Seven Last Words of Christ
“Dear woman, here is your son.” (John 19:26)
Jesus we come—to walk the road with you—to follow you to the cross. We prepare ourselves now to follow your footprints in the dust. To understand how you died. To understand how we die. To understand how you lived. To understand how we should live.
You turned, in your suffering, to care for those who cared for you. You turned those you loved toward each other, and asked them to give each other the status of family. You have called us your sisters, your brothers.
May we, in turn, turn to those you love, to your church, and give them the status of family.
(extinguish 3rd candle)
Let us pray:
God of all places and people, you are not bound by walls, contained by addresses, or limited by borders and barriers. Open our eyes to see ourselves at home in you, wherever we are and whatever our experiences. Teach us to recognize our neighbors as our fellow travelers and co-habitants, alive together in You through Jesus Christ. Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE:
HYMN #227 (Red) ‘Jesus Remember Me’
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy One, our strength in suffering and our hope for salvation, lift up your Word of life and pour out your Spirit of grace so that we may follow faithfully all the way to the cross; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Psalm 51:15
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 55:1-9
1 Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
listen, so that you may live.
I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know,
and nations that do not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.
6 Seek the Lord while he may be found,
call upon him while he is near;
7 let the wicked forsake their way,
and the unrighteous their thoughts;
let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Psalm 63:1-8 (read responsively)
1O God, you are my God, I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
3 Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands and call on your name.
5 My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips
6 when I think of you on my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
7 for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
8 My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
Luke 13:1-9
1At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”
6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ 8 He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
We proclaim Christ crucified—the wisdom and power of God.
Thanks be to God. 1 Corinthians 1:23–25
REFLECTION: ‘God Moves Over the Fence’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN # 438 (Red) “Rock of Ages”
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.
Let the water and the blood from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure, cleanse from guilt and make me pure.
Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands.
Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone.
Thou must save, and thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring; simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress, helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN #65 (Red) ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah’
Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but thou art mighty.
Hold me with thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me till I want no more; feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
be thou still my strength and shield; be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side.

I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee.
