SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Palm Sunday

PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Who is this unlikely king?
Hosanna! His name is Jesus!
Why does he ride into the city?
Hosanna! He comes to save us!
Let us wave our palms, throw down our cloaks,
and follow Christ toward the cross.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
We praise you, O God, for your redemption of the world through Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph and was proclaimed Messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Let these branches be signs of his victory, and grant that we who carry them may follow him in the way of the cross, that, dying and rising with him, we may enter into your kingdom; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
OPENING PROCLAMATION -- Rev. Kaul
12 The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord--
the King of Israel!”
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion.
Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him.
HYMN “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
Thou art the King of Israel
Thou David's royal Son,
Who in the Lord's name comest,
The King and Blessed One.
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
The people of the Hebrews
With palms before Thee went;
Our praise and prayers and anthems
Before Thee we present.
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
To Thee, before Thy passion,
They sang their hymns of praise;
To Thee, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise.
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
Thou didst accept their praises,
Accept the prayers we bring,
Who in all good delightest,
Thou good and gracious King!
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
CALL TO CONFESSION
In the name of Christ, I urge you: Be reconciled to God.
Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Hosanna, we pray. Save us, Lord. Save us from ourselves, when we trip over pride, doubt, or fear. Save us from the systems that keep us bound, when we cannot see the way out. Save us from our sins, when we feel their weight pressing on our hearts. Remind us, O Lord, that crowds shouting “Hosanna” will soon be screaming “Crucify him.” Save us we pray, O Lord, and do not let us be among them.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Listen, the time has come at last. Look, now is the day of salvation!
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
LENTEN CANDLES
Sixth Sunday: Wood
In this season of Lent, we reflect on our journey of faith with Christ, remembering that long ago God planted the Tree of Life, and yet it is on a tree that Christ is crucified. We are again reminded that life comes out of death, and we are promised that death does not have the final word.
We extinguish this candle on Palm Sunday, the last Sunday of Lent, remembering God’s faithfulness through the cross upon which our Lord was crucified, that death will be no more, mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for Christ triumphs over death.
Prayer: As the days lengthen, dear God, may we remember that you are the one who calls life out of death, that you are the Lord of our lives. In the name of Christ, may we have the strength found in him to journey towards the cross. Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Gracious God, our way in the wilderness, guide us by your Word through these forty days, and minister to us with your Holy Spirit,
so that we may be reformed, restored, and renewed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Psalm 51:5
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 (read responsively)
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches,
up to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.
29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Mark 11:1-11
1 When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4 They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
We proclaim Christ crucified—the wisdom and power of God.
Thanks be to God. (1 Corinthians 1:23-25)
REFLECTION: “Nothing Off Limits” Rev. Norlita Kaul
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN “Hosanna Loud Hosanna”
Hosanna, loud hosanna the little children sang;
Through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to His breast,
The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.
From Olivet they followed ‘mid an exultant crowd,
The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud;
The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,
Nor scorned that little children should on His bidding wait.
"Hosanna in the highest!" that ancient song we sing,
For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King.
O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice,
And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice.
