Order of Worship
Palm Sunday
April 5, 2020
Welcome to this our time of worship together, for this Palm Sunday.
We come seeking care, comfort, strength, hope and peace from God.
OPENING WORDS: The sacrifice acceptable to God is a humble spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 52:17
*CALL TO WORSHIP --
Look! Your king is coming—humble and riding on a donkey.
Hosanna to the Son of David!
Lay your cloaks before him; spread palms to honor him.
Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!
Raise your voices. Lift your hearts. Rejoice—our Savior comes!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!
(We are invited to listen to the hymns and sing along with them. They can be also found on our website, found under Worship and in Sermons folder.)
HYMN “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”
All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
Thou art the King of Israel
Thou David's royal Son,
Who in the Lord's name comest,
The King and blessed One.
All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
The people of the Hebrews
With palms before Thee went;
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before Thee we present.
All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
To Thee, before Thy passion,
They sang their hymns of praise;
To Thee, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise.
All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
Thou didst accept their praises;
Accept the prayers we bring,
Who in all good delightest,
Thou good and gracious King!
All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King!
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
CALL TO CONFESSION (1 Samuel 16:7)
The Lord sees our hearts and knows our innermost thoughts.
We can deny our wrongs to ourselves but we cannot hide them from God.
As we confess our sins, let us do so knowing we say nothing that is not
already known to God, who is not fooled by our strength, but loves us in our weakness.
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Suffering God, the way of the cross is a hard road. It is draining. It is demanding. It is fraught with danger. You ask us to stay by your side as you walk toward Calvary. But weariness and fear overtake us.
Like the first disciples, we are quick to betray you, to deny you, to abandon you. Forgive us, God, and strengthen us for the journey ahead. Give us courage to face the pain and suffering of this world and to respond with compassion. As the darkness gathers, renew our faith,fill us with hope, and startle us with your grace. (time for reflection)
*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE AND FORGIVENESS (John 13:31)
Now the Lord Jesus Christ has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. Now the promise is fulfilled, and love’s redeeming work is done: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION --
Let your Word, O God, break open our hearts this day though the power of the Holy Spirit, that we may enter into the coming Holy Week ready to meet Jesus as he is, not what we expect him to be. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 118:1-2, 19-1, 25-29
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches,
up to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.
29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Matthew 21:1-11
1 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” 4 This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7 they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
10 When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”
MESSAGE “Why Did Jesus Do It?”
(Please look for the message in the sermon’s area on the website. An e-mail copy of the message is available by request from the church office.)
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO THE OFFERING
Let our hosannas to the one who brings liberation take form in our tithes and offerings.
OFFERING HYMN: “Hosanna Loud Hosanna”
Hosanna, loud hosanna,
The little children sang;
Through pillared court and temple
The joyful anthem rang;
To Jesus, who had blessed them
Close folded to His breast,
The children sang their praises,
The simplest and the best.
From Olivet they followed
Mid an exultant crowd,
The victory palm branch waving,
And chanting clear and loud;
The Lord of earth and heaven
Rode on in lowly state,
Nor scorned that little children
Should on His bidding wait.
"Hosanna in the highest!"
That ancient song we sing,
For Christ is our Redeemer,
The Lord of heaven, our King.
O may we ever praise Him
With heart and life and voice,
And in His blissful presence
Eternally rejoice.
We offer ourselves, to God
(By offering up our time, talents, intellect and resources, we’re asking God’s blessings upon them. Please prayerfully consider sending your tithes/offerings to the church by mail or via online banking. Sharing of ourselves within a phone call/text or email is another way in the offering of ourselves.)
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Blessed Lord, we surrender our lives to your prophetic message of salvation. You have given us the gift of enduring steadfast love. Multiply these gifts, so that we may share the magnitude of your joy-filled message throughout our community and world. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Amen. (David S. Bell)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(Please read the petition silently or if worshiping with family, have persons take turns reading the petition)
O Christ, out of your fullness we have all received grace upon grace. You are our eternal hope; you are patient and full of mercy; you are generous to all who call upon you.
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, fountain of life and holiness, you have taken away our sins. On the cross you were wounded for our transgressions and were bruised for our iniquities.
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, obedient unto death, source of all comfort, our life and our resurrection,
our peace and reconciliation:
Save us, Lord.
O Christ, Savior of all who trust you, hope of all who die for you, and joy of all the saints:
Save us, Lord.
Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.
Jesus remember us when you come into your kingdom. Hear our intercessions.
For your church around the world,
we ask new life.
For all who carry out ministries in your church,
we ask grace and wisdom.
For people who accepted spiritual disciplines,
we ask inspired discipleship.
For Christians of every land,
we ask new unity in your name.
For Jews and Muslims and people of other faiths,
we ask your divine blessing.
For those who cannot believe,
we ask your faithful love.
For governors and rulers in every land,
we ask your guidance.
For people who suffer and sorrow (especially those during this time of COVID19 Pandemic)
we ask your healing peace.
For doctors, nurses, health care workers, first responders, all in helping/service professions who are working fervently during this, our time of pandemic,
we ask your comfort, strength, fortitude, protection and sustenance.
(Add your personal intentions at this moment)
Holy God, your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world and brought humanity the gift of reconciliation by the suffering and death he endured. Teach those who bear his name to follow the example he gave us. May our faith, hope and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life. Keep our feet firmly in the way where Christ leads us, in his holy name we pray. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
(We’re invited to listen to in prayerful mode or to sing along with the sung version, found on our website, under Worship and in Sermons folder.)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HYMN “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”
Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock
Within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat
And the burden of the day.
Upon the cross of Jesus
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me:
And from my stricken heart with tears
Two wonders I confess,
The wonders of redeeming love
And my unworthiness.
*BENEDICTION
Place your trust in the God who sees your need and showers compassion upon you. See others through the compassionate eyes of Christ, and demonstrate God’s love to them. May the steadfast love of God, the abundant grace of Jesus Christ, and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, be with you this day and always. Amen.
Our thanks to Donna Flint/Elizabeth Fox and our administrative assistant Rozanne McGrath for their assistance in putting it up onto our website.

Respectfully submitted,
