SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Third Sunday of Easter
4-18-2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
HYMN #104 “Christ is Risen, Shout Hosanna”
Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna!
Celebrate this day of days!
Christ is risen! Hush in wonder,
All creation is amazed.
In the desert all surrounding,
See, a spreading tree has grown.
Healing leaves of grace abounding
Bring a taste of love unknown.
Christ is risen! Raise your spirits
From the caverns of despair.
Walk with gladness in the morning.
See what love can do and dare.
Drink the wine of resurrection,
Not a servant, but a friend;
Jesus is our strong companion.
Joy and peace shall never end.
Christ is risen! Earth and heaven
Nevermore shall be the same.
Break the bread of new creation
Where the world is still in pain.
Tell its grim, demonic chorus
“Christ is risen! Get you gone!”
God the First and Last is with us.
Sing Hosanna, every one!
CALL TO WORSHIP
When the disciples were certain that Jesus was dead,
he stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
Let us watch for the risen Christ this day,
bursting in with new life and new hope.
Easter people, Christ is risen!
Christ is risen indeed!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, through your only Son you overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life. Grant that we who celebrate our Lord’s resurrection, may, through the renewing power of your Spirit, arise from the death of sin to the life of righteousness to be children of God, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
The Spirit of God helps us in our weakness,
interceding with sighs too deep for words.
Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
What love you have given us, O God, that we should be called your children. What love you have given us, O Christ, that we should share a table with you. Forgive us when we act as if we were your only children: when we do not recognize your image in the faces of strangers, enemies, or friends; when we do not share our own tables, forgetting that we need each other. Forgive us, O Christ, maker of peace, and teach us to follow in your way.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Hear the good news of God’s promise: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God of power and grace, fill us with the wisdom of your Word and the understanding of your Spirit so that we may be your church: a people with dreams and visions at work in all the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
Ezekiel 37:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 4 (read responsively)
1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
2 How long, you people, shall my honor suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies? Selah
3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
4 When you are disturbed, do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
6 There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.
8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
1 John 3:1-7
1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4 Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
This is the good news which we have received,
in which we stand, and by which we are saved.
Thanks be to God. 1 Corinthians 15:1–2
REFLECTION: “Children of God” Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN #390 “O Savior, In This Quiet Place”
O Savior, in this quiet place,
Where anyone may kneel,
I also come to ask for grace,
Believing You can heal.
If pain of body, stress of mind,
Destroys my inward peace,
In prayer for others may I find
The secret of release.
If self upon its sickness feeds
And turns my life to gall,
Let me not brood upon my needs,
But simply tell You all.
You never said “You ask too much”
To any troubled soul.
I long to feel your healing touch;
Will you not make me whole?
But if the thing I most desire
Is not Your way for me,
May faith, when tested in the fire,
Prove its integrity.
Of all my prayers, may this be chief:
Till faith is fully grown,
Lord, disbelieve my unbelief,
And claim me as Your own.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
New life in Christ takes shape in a community in which people know that God loves and accepts them in spite of what they are. They therefore accept themselves and love others, knowing that no one has any ground on which to stand, except God’s grace.
Adapted from the Confession of 1967, 9.22
INVITATION TO OFFERING
There is only one Lord and God from whom all things come and for whom we live. Let us offer our lives to the Lord.
SPECIAL MUSIC “I Know that My Redeemer Lives” MK Hugghins & Rev. Norlita Kaul
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Forgiving Father, we faithfully give witness to your work in this world by sharing these gifts and offerings. You shared your Son, Jesus, so that we may repent of our sins and be saved. Thank you for providing us with the example of how to place courageously your call of discipleship into action. We pray that we may live each day according to your holy ways. In the name of the Great Teacher, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Luke 24:36b-48 (David S. Bell)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
our response will be sung:
O Surrexit Christus, Alleluia
O Cantate Domino, Alleluia
OUR TIME TO PRAY:
Risen Christ, Your living presence is celebrated by those in need of healing and those who are amazed in hearts and minds. Guide our lives shaper of our faith, for we long for you to hear us as we wrestle with our separation from others. We miss the sharing of stories that come across in our worship spaces, of time over coffee fellowship. We long to hear the familiar laughter and the heartful comfort shared between chairs and pews, to listen for Your direction in the calling of our community.
RESPONSE-O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia.
Be with us in our moments of wonder, of unexpected changes, when our lives are disrupted by the extraordinary. Suddenly in those times we see You standing in our midst speaking words of peace and inspiring Your world to discover possibilities of the kingdom of heaven in the ordinary of the world. Help us enjoy these moments of wonder, when explanation and logic chips away at our faith. Help us to marvel at the growing of our knowledge of wonder, starlit skies, molecules and atoms, a creation so full of opportunities. Cause us to delve into discovering more of you O God.
RESPONSE- O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia.
Continue to amaze and thrill us with your mystery, of what we are yet to know, expand our desire. Your care for us is unfailing, creative God, making us in Your image. Thank you for your steadfast Love. Thank you that Your presence spills into our songs and prayers. We pin our hopes upon this love and care for the health of the places we live and the people we love.
Response-O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia.
In this journey through this pandemic, we thank you for those who offered and continue to offer signs of resurrection power in their work and commitments. We pray for doctors, nurses, support staff, first responders who tirelessly care for humankind, who do so with potential harm to themselves and their families. We pray for the scientific community as it continues its work of research and development, care and prevention. We pray for those who are the recipients of care, noticing the wide range of people whose health has been affected:
-Darwin L (Jeanne’s husband) and Jeanne as caregiver
-Carrie VB
-Gene G
-Bob & Jan J
-Sharon W
-Andrew L
-LaVonne B
-Jan B
-Judith (Judy & Mike’s sister-in-law)

-Rocky (Judy & Mike’s nephew)
-Gwen M (friend of Elizabeth)
-Kara (Richard & Dolores’ daughter)
-Sue (friend of Ella)
-Riley (son of Rev. Norlita’s friend)
Grant them healing according to Your will.
RESPONSE-O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia.
Help us to recognize that while the virus has global impact, we are not equal in the immunization distribution and efforts. Help us to notice communities who will be the last to receive the support they need and work towards the fairer share of wealth and resource so Your Risen Presence reveals Your kingdom in every land. We pray for our nation's leaders, and all leaders in our world to make wise decisions according to Your will. We pray for our Church Leaders:
Prayers for Second Presbyterian in Flandreau, Pastor Ann Spitzenberger; our Presbytery of South Dakota; the PCUSA (leaders and staff); and our own Session, Deacons, members and friends, and Brookings United Church of Christ staff, church council, and members. We continue to pray for Christ’s church universal and at work here in Brookings.
Guide our hearts, minds, and spirits in better and fuller service to Your purposes O God.

Response-O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia
Christ of life and death and resurrection, we celebrate those who have shared this life with us, allowing us to meet you in simple words and actions. We grieve with those who mourn the death of loved ones.
Those who mourn: We continue to pray for the Salonen, Jenner, Fishback, Kennedy N., Watson, Peterson, Larson and Kaul/Robinson families and for all who have lost loved ones.
May we be those who share the memories and love that allows hope to rise from the ashes of loss. You bring light into the darkness of our days. you will brighten our path, leading us to fresh moments of spring's promise. In our homes, help us to sing out our praise to You, holding nothing back to sing and shout forth the praise of resurrection Joy.
Response-O Surrexit Christus Alleluia, O Cantate Domino Alleluia.
This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our crucified and risen Lord who taught us to pray saying....
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
