SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Day of Pentecost/Communion
June 5, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Wild and free, creative and refreshing, God’s Spirit blows through this place.
Come, Holy Spirit!
Gentle and mysterious, patient and caring, God’s Spirit moves in our hearts.
Come, Holy Spirit!
Breaking barriers and making connections, healing divisions and making us one,
God’s Spirit flows between us.
Come, Holy Spirit!
*HYMN #280 (Red) ‘Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us’ (verses 1 & 2)
Come, O Spirit, dwell among us;
come with Pentecostal power;
give the church a stronger vision;
help us face each crucial hour.
Built upon a firm foundation,
Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone,
still the church is called to mission
that God's love shall be made known.
We would raise our alleluias
for the grace of yesteryears;
for tomorrow's unknown pathway,
hear, O Lord, our humble prayers.
In the church's pilgrim journey
you have led us all the way;
still in presence move before us,
fire by night and cloud by day.
CALL TO CONFESSION
The promise of Pentecost lies in the relentless, irresistible activity of God, whose Spirit comes among us with power and grace. God refuses to leave us alone, but rather keeps showing up with mercy and love. In confidence, let us confess our sin.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of fire and wind, holy and powerful, mighty and mysterious, we are drawn by your Spirit to this place. As we gather and behold your glory, we become aware of our sin. We have ignored your word. We have rejected your gifts. We have failed in your work. Ignoring the truth of Pentecost, we exclude those different from us. We divide our loyalties, and we divide our hearts. Let your Spirit burn away our sins and fill us with faith and courage, so that we might live into the promise of this day and receive the fullness of all that you have prepared for us in Jesus Christ. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The Holy Spirit animates our lives, lifting us into the presence of Christ, and sealing our hearts in the promise of his faithful love. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God of power and grace, fill us with the wisdom of your Word and the understanding of your Spirit so that we may be your church: a people with dreams and visions at work in all the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
*HYMN: #288 (Red) ‘Spirit by the Living God’ (2 verses)
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Genesis 11:1-9
1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” 5 The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth, and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every people under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Fellow Jews and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit,
and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show portents in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
*HYMN: #291 (Red) ‘Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness’ (verses 1 & 4)
Refrain:
Spirit, spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness, calling and free
Spirit, spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
You moved on the waters;
you called to the deep;
then you coaxed up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons
you called to each thing,
“Awake from your slumbers
and rise on your wings.” [Refrain]
You call from tomorrow;
you break ancient schemes;
from the bondage of sorrow
The captives dream dreams.
Our women see visions;
our men clear their eyes.
With bold new decisions
Your people arise. [Refrain]
REFLECTION: ‘The Ultimate Surprise Party’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –
God the Holy Spirit fulfills the work of reconciliation in human life. The Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which people are reconciled to God and to one another. The Spirit enables people to receive forgiveness as they forgive one another and to enjoy the peace of God as they make peace among themselves. In spite of their sin, the Spirit gives people power to become representatives of Jesus Christ and his gospel of reconciliation to all.

INVITATION TO OFFERING

DOXOLOGY (please stand)

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
God of Amazement and Wonder, you have been preparing the way for us throughout time. You sent people like the prophet Joel and Peter to guide our spiritual journey. On this day of Pentecost, we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes confused but often in awe, we watch the everyday miracles experienced all around us. All things are possible with you, O God. We trust that this offering will foster the miracles and the possibilities that you have in store for this church community. We await with hearts already filled in amazement and wonder at your ways. Come Holy Spirit, come! Amen. (Acts 2:1-21 David S. Bell)

INVITATION TO THE TABLE
This was just ordinary bread, baked for guests.
This was just a cup filled with wine until Jesus took them,
took and drank from the cup, even though it was his cup of pain,
filled with the agony of the world; took and broke the bread –
even though his body was too young to be broken.
This and these would be ordinary lives unless the bread, unless the wine,
by the power of the Holy Spirit is poured into them:
and the mystery of grace takes place.
Today we recall the power of the Holy Spirit also on that first Pentecost Sunday.
To today, the Holy Spirit blows where it wills, in us.
Come, not because you fully understand, but because you need to reach out and receive the life that is offered to you.
THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It right to give our thanks and praise.
God, you are before all things; You are beyond all things;
And in the midst of all things and all peoples you have made yourself known.
Your Holy Spirit blows where it wills upon all you have made, upon us.
In Israel's ancient codes and prophetic oracles, in stories of women and men, of communities and nations seeking identity, especially after the Tower of Babel was constructed in human frailty,
feeling their strength, and struggling with their human weakness you have made yourself known O God.
In Jesus of Nazareth, in compassion for the outcast, forgiveness for the fallen, hope for the poor and hungry; in his life poured out for others and broken in rejection and disdain.
Through the Holy Spirit's power, God you have made yourself known.
Therefore we join our praises with countless men and women before us,
disciples and apostles, saints and martyrs, acclaiming your power in goodness and your might in compassion, as we say:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We greet the one who comes in your name, your true light, your true love, the bread of compassion, the wine of renewal, the breath of life.
Let us pray with confidence as Jesus taught us…
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
As Jesus broke the bread before the brokenness of his death, saying take eat....as he poured out wine before his blood was poured out on the cross, He gave you thanks and praise.....saying take, drink......as he gave his life in acts of goodness, as he invited all to the feast of new hope, so come to us, God of Jesus, God of Holy Spirit, come in your love.
Come to us, Spirit of our Lord of love,
and let the bread and wine before us
bear your life to our life,
nourish us with his vision of hope,
and unite us in one body of peace.
Nourish us with your brokenness,
Renew us with your poured out life,
Empower us with your powerlessness,
that we may take root in your risen life
and bear fruit in your world.
You are our life;
You are our hope;
You are our peace;
And we praise you.
LORD’S SUPPER LITANY
In our sharing bread today we include in companionship the saints alive and the saints resurrected.
In our sharing of bread today we include in companionship the poor, marginalized and rejected of this world.
In our sharing of bread today we include in companionship those known to us and those not known, who need Jesus now.
In our sharing of bread today we include in companionship Jesus, our incarnated, broken and risen Lord.
AMEN!
Wine is for sorrow and for joy, for suffering and for celebration, for forgiveness and for New Relationship.
We drink until Christ returns.
AMEN!
And so we pray:
Send us out to wait and to work for the Kingdom. Make us people of hope, fanning the flames of redemption and resurrection in the world.
AMEN!
Come For All Things Are Now Ready!
SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Holy God, by the gift of your Spirit you have nourished and filled us. Now send us out to share the vision of new creation you have begun; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
*HYMN #289 (Red) ‘On Pentecost They Gathered’ (verses 1 & 4)
On Pentecost they gathered
quite early in the day,
a band of Christ’s disciples,
to worship, sing, and pray.
A mighty wind came blowing,
filled all the swirling air,
and tongues of fire aglowing
inspired each person there.
O Spirit, sent from heaven
on that day long ago,
rekindle faith among us
in all life’s ebb and flow.
O give us ears to listen
and tongues aflame with praise,
so folk to every nation
glad songs of joy shall raise.
