Trinity Sunday/Hymn Sing
June 12, 2022
PRELUDE ‘Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone,’ arr. Anna Page
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
Heaven and earth are filled with the glory of God.
*HYMN #138 (Blue) ‘Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty’
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinfulness Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
CALL TO CONFESSION
The triune God mercifully and graciously invites us into a relationship of wholeness. In humility and truth, let us confess the sin that keeps us from the life God intends.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Mother, Lover, and Friend, one God in three persons, mutual and whole, we confess our relationships are not that way. We have been too selfish; or we have given too much; or we have accepted too little. Our sin drives us away from one another and from you. Forgive us and restore us. Draw us close that we may know life in all of its fullness. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
God’s love is poured out through the Holy Spirit. This is love from God’s own heart, love that cleanses and renews. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy, Holy, Holy One, guide us by the Spirit of truth to hear the Word of life you speak, and to give all glory, honor, and praise to your threefold name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 8 (read responsively)
1 O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
4 what are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
5 Yet you have made them a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
John 16:12-15
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Keep these words in your heart. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
Thanks be to God. Deuteronomy 6:6
THE MEANING OF TRINITY SUNDAY – N.T. WRIGHT
‘In the church’s year, Trinity Sunday is the day when we stand back from the extraordinary sequence of events that we’ve been celebrating for the previous five months—Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost—and when we rub the sleep from our eyes and discover what the word ‘god’ might actually mean. These events function as a sequence of well-aimed hammer-blows which knock at the clay jars of the gods we want, the gods who reinforce our own pride or prejudice until they fall away and reveal instead a very different god, a dangerous god, a subversive god, a god who comes to us like a blind beggar with wounds in his hands, a god who comes to us in wind and fire, in bread and wine, in flesh and blood: a god who says to us, ‘You did not choose me; I chose you.’
You see, the doctrine of the Trinity, properly understood, is as much a way of saying ‘we don’t know’ as of saying ‘we do know.’ To say that the true God is Three and One is to recognize that if there is a God then of course we shouldn’t expect him to fit neatly into our little categories. If he did, he wouldn’t be God at all, merely a god, a god we might perhaps have wanted. The Trinity is not something that the clever theologian comes up with as a result of hours spent in the theological laboratory, after which he or she can return to announce that they’ve got God worked out now, the analysis is complete, and here is God neatly laid out on a slab. The only time they laid God out on a slab he rose again three days afterwards.
On the contrary, the doctrine of the Trinity is, if you like, a signpost pointing ahead into the dark, saying: ‘Trust me; follow me; my love will keep you safe.” Or, perhaps better the doctrine of the Trinity is a signpost pointing into a light which gets brighter and brighter until we are dazzled and blinded, but which says: ‘Come, and I will make you children of light.’ The doctrine of the Trinity affirms the rightness, the propriety, of speaking intelligently that the true God must always transcend our grasp of him, even our most intelligent grasp of him.”
HYMN SING
# 462 (Red) ‘I Love to Tell the Story’
I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story because I know it's true;
it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.
Refrain:
I love to tell the story; 'twill be my theme in glory
to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story; ‘tis pleasant to repeat
which seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story; for some have never heard
the message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. [Refrain]
I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
'twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. [Refrain]
# 250 (Red) ‘In the Bulb There is a Flower’
In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody;
there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
(on screen) ‘There’s Something About That Name’
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!
There’s just something about that name!
Master, Savior, Jesus!
Like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!
Let all heaven and earth proclaim:
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name!
(on screen) ‘Jesus Calls Us o’er the Tumult’
Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild, restless sea;
day by day His sweet voice soundeth, saying, “Christian, follow me.”
Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world’s golden store,
from each idol that would keep us, saying , “Christian, love me more.”
In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease,
still He calls, in cares and pleasures, “Christian, love me more than these.”
Jesus calls us—by Thy mercies, Savior, may we hear Thy call;
give our hearts to Thine obedience, serve and love Thee best of all.
# 260 (Blue) ‘A Mighty Fortress is Our God’ (verses 1, 2, 4)
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not His equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same;
And He must win the battle.
That Word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still;
His kingdom is forever.
# 302 (Blue) ‘I Danced in the Morning’
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth;
At Bethlehem I had My birth.
Refrain:
"Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance," said He.
"And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, I will lead you all in the dance," said He.
I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance and they would not follow Me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and for John;
They came with Me and the dance went on. [Refrain]
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame;
The holy people said it was a shame;
They whipped and they stripped and they hung Me high,
And left Me there on a cross to die. [Refrain]
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back;
They buried My body and they thought I'd gone,
But I am the dance and I still go on. [Refrain]
They cut Me down and I leap up high,
I am the life that will never, never die,
I'll live in you if you'll live in Me;
"I am the Lord of the Dance," said He. [Refrain]
# 525 (Blue) ‘Here I Am, Lord’
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in deepest sin My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Refrain:
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne My people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them, they turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts of love alone.
I will speak My word to them.
Whom shall I send? [Refrain]
I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My life to them.
Whom shall I send? [Refrain]
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods yet refuses to help a sister or brother in need? Remembering God’s great love for the world, let us offer our lives to the Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
God of Hope, we humbly present these gifts in recognition of the grace that you offer us each and every day. You have endowed us with great bounty. Today, we give a portion of this bounty to you as a generous expression of our gratitude. We are compelled though biblical teaching to share generously in ways that impact the greater mission of the church. We exalt your Holy Name as we participate in this sacrificial act of offering ourselves to you. We pray through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
(Romans 5:1-5 David S. Bell)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
We are a world that is desperate for you, O God.
When powers struggle for dominance, and war, oppression and abuse result; when groups of people oppose one another because of ideology, religion or culture;
We need a God who is bigger than ourselves, and our personal interests.
(open for others to name as Prayer specific areas of conflict in the world)
When people are disregarded and devalued because of poverty, geography or disease; when compassion and justice is withheld to some because of sexuality, race or gender:
We need a Savior who is more compassionate than we are who includes even those we would exclude.
(open for others to name as Prayer for specific people and places of suffering in the world)
When resources are mismanaged and abused, and the world and its creatures are destroyed; when motivation is scarce and creativity is in short supply to address the challenges that we face;
We need a Spirit who is more powerful and more creative than we could ever be.
(open for others to name as Prayer for specific challenges and issues that we struggle with in the world, for our loved ones, our church and prayer families)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #139 (Blue) ‘Come Thou Almighty King’ (verses 1 & 4)
Come, Thou almighty King, help us Thy name to sing;
Help us to praise.
Father, all-glorious, o'er all victorious,
Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be,

And to eternity love and adore.

How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods yet refuses to help a sister or brother in need? Remembering God’s great love for the world, let us offer our lives to the Lord. Amen.
1 John 3:16–17
*DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
When powers struggle for dominance, and war, oppression and abuse result; when groups of people oppose one another because of ideology, religion or culture;
(open for others to name as Prayer for specific people and places of suffering in the world)
When resources are mismanaged and abused, and the world and its creatures are destroyed; when motivation is scarce and creativity is in short supply to address the challenges that we face;
We need a Spirit who is more powerful and more creative than we could ever be.
(open for others to name as Prayer for specific challenges and issues that we struggle with in the world, for our loved ones, our church and prayer families)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #139 (Blue) ‘Come Thou Almighty King’ (verses 1 & 4)
Come, Thou almighty King, help us Thy name to sing;
Help us to praise.
Father, all-glorious, o'er all victorious,
Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be,
Hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see,
And to eternity love and adore.
