SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
3rd Sunday after Pentecost
June 26, 2022
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
We gather to worship our God of wonder,
and we gather to meditate on God’s works and mighty deeds.
Our God who is great and mighty, with arms stretched out,
welcomes us into the fold.
*HYMN #41 (Red) ‘O Worship the King, All Glorious Above!’
O worship the King all-glorious above!
O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love:
our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
O tell of God’s might; O sing of Gods grace,
whose robe is the light, whose canopy space,
whose chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
and bright is God’s path on the wings of the storm.
The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your power has founded of old;
established it fast by a changeless decree,
and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.
Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air; it shines in the light;
it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
in you do we trust, nor find you to fail.
your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Seeking to follow God, shepherd of our flock, and knowing how we have strayed, we humbly confess the ways in which we have sinned, that we might find grace.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Living God, in Jesus Christ, we have been given Good News of saving and sacrificial love. This news is the very breath that offers us life. It is the unmerited salvation, the gift of grace, and the hope of an eternal home in your kingdom. In times of suffering or sorrow, in times of rejoicing and rest, this is indeed the Good News of our entire being. But we forget that sometimes, Lord. We separate it from daily news. We hide it away so we don’t offend. Lord, make your will our will, your intent our intentionality. Make intentional authentic evangelism who we are, unapologetically. Make it so that we cannot help but share this good news in authentic relationship with others. Lord, this we pray to the one who gave life so that we might live, Jesus Christ. Amen.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Sisters and brothers, we are all called to freedom. Amidst thunderous storms and rocky waters, God reaches out to us in love. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Faithful God, how blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Sanctify us by your Word and Spirit so that we may glorify you in the company of the faithful; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4
READER’S THEATRE (John 4:1-41)
NARRATOR Jesus came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. Then a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well.
JESUS Will you give me a drink?
SAMARITAN WOMAN You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?
NARRATOR (ASIDE) You must understand that Jews do not associate with Samaritans.
JESUS If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.
SAMARITAN WOMAN Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?
JESUS Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
SAMARITAN WOMAN Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.
JESUS Go, call your husband and come back.
SAMARITAN WOMAN I have no husband.
JESUS You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.
SAMARITAN WOMAN Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.
(PAUSES ONE TO 2 SECONDS, PONDERING)
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
JESUS Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
SAMARITAN WOMAN I know that Messiah -- the Christ -- is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.
JESUS I who speak to you am he.
NARRATOR Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?" Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
SAMARITAN WOMAN Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?
NARRATOR They came out of the town and made their way toward him. Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."
JESUS I have food to eat that you know nothing about.
NARRATOR Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"
JESUS "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor."
NARRATOR Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony...
SAMARITAN WOMAN (IN AWE) He told me everything I ever did.
NARRATOR So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. They said to the woman,
ALL We no longer believe ,just because of what you said.
Now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really IS the Savior of the world.
Keep these words in your heart. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
Thanks be to God. Deuteronomy 6:6
REFLECTION: ‘Water and Food’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
*HYMN #415 (Red) ‘Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy’
Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
full of pity, love, and power.
Refrain:
I will arise and go to Jesus;
He will embrace me in his arms.
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O there are ten thousand charms.
Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome,
God's free bounty glorify,
true belief and true repentance,
every grace that brings you nigh. [Refrain]
Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
lost and ruined by the fall;
if you tarry till you're better,
you will never come at all. [Refrain]
Let not conscience make you linger,
nor of fitness fondly dream;
all the fitness he requireth
is to feel your need of him. [Refrain]
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Everlasting God, you never ask us to wait when we cry out in despair. You are ever-present. You provide counsel in our bleakest moments. You share joy in our celebratory times. We confess that sometimes we are reluctant in our relationship with you. We do not desire to be the “would-be” followers of Jesus, like Luke describes. Help us to be committed totally to you in the days ahead. We rededicate ourselves to you and share a portion of our financial earnings with you. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. ( Luke 9:51-62 David S. Bell)

*HYMN: #81 (Red) ‘Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken’
Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God;
God, whose word cannot be broken,
formed thee for a blest abode.
On the rock of ages founded,
what can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
thou may’st smile at all thy foes.
Round each habitation hovering,
see the cloud and fire appear
for a glory and a covering,
showing that the Lord is near.
Thus deriving from their banner
light by night and shade by day,
safe they feed upon the manna,
which God gives them when they pray.
See, the streams of living waters,
springing from eternal love,
well supply thy sons and daughters
and all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river
ever flows, their thirst to assuage?
Grace, so like the Lord the giver,
never fails from age to age.
