                                        SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
                                      4th Sunday after Pentecost
                                      Honoring Our Independence
                                                   July 3, 2022

PRELUDE

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP
When we were low,
     God raised us up.
When we were weak,
     God made us strong.
When we were weeping,
     God brought us joy.

*HYMN  #679 (Red) ‘Let the Whole Creation Cry’
     Let the whole creation cry,
"Glory to the Lord on high!"
Heaven and earth, awake and sing,
     "Praise to our almighty King!"
     Praise God, angel hosts above,
     ever bright and fair in love;
sun and moon, uplift your voice,
night and stars, in God rejoice!

Men and women, young and old,
raise the anthem loud and bold,
     join with children's songs of praise;
worship God through length of days.
From the north to southern pole
     let the mighty chorus roll:
     “Holy, holy, holy One,
     glory be to God alone!”

CALL TO CONFESSION
Jesus calls us to enter the joy of discipleship, the joy of following in his way.
But sin clings closely, and we struggle to respond fully to Christ’s invitation.
Let us seek God’s forgiveness so that we may know more deeply the joy God intends.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Christ, you took on human flesh, so that we might see and believe, so that we might live a life surrendered to ourselves and steadfast upon the salvation you bring. You took on flesh, and you entered this world, this community, this congregation, so that we might follow you in faithful paths of redemption. But, Lord, you know we fear what we do not know; we sit unwilling to follow you out. It is not that we don’t care about an outward focus of you in meeting the needs of a broken and fearful world crying out for salvation, but we get busy. We get overwhelmed by the weight of it all. Lord, fill us with your emboldened Spirit of courage and strength, so that we might be led out to join our living God. Make us the community you long for us to be: a beacon of light, a vessel of hope, a glimpse of eternal love for all people to witness. For we pray to the One who is fully God and fully human, Jesus Christ. Amen.   (Silent reflection)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Relentlessly God seeks us out. With abundant grace and boundless mercy,
God seeks us out. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

*GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
         World without end. Amen, Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy, Holy, Holy One, guide us by the Spirit of truth to hear the Word of life you speak, and to give all glory, honor, and praise to your threefold name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you faithful ones and give thanks to His holy name.
                                                                                                 Psalm 30

SCRIPTURE READING
Romans 12:1-21 Reader’s Theatre

One:    And so, dear brothers and sisters,
I plead with you to give your bodies to God
because of all he has done for you.
Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable.
This is truly the way to worship him.

Two:    Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world,
but let God transform you into a new person
by changing the way you think.
Then you will learn to know God’s will for you,
which is good and pleasing and perfect.

One:    Because of the privilege and authority God has given me,
I give each of you this warning:
Don’t think you are better than you really are.
Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves,
measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

Two:    Just as our bodies have many parts
and each part has a special function,
so it is with Christ’s body.
We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

One:    In his grace,
God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.
So if God has given you the ability to prophesy,
speak out with as much faith as God has given you.

Two:    If your gift is serving others, serve them well.

One:     If you are a teacher, teach well.

Two:    If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging.

One:     If it is giving, give generously.

Two:    If God has given you leadership ability,
            take the responsibility seriously.

One:     And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

One:     Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them.

Two:    Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.

One:    Love each other with genuine affection,
and take delight in honoring each other.

Two:    Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.

One:     Rejoice in our confident hope.
Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.

Two:    When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them.
Always be eager to practice hospitality.

One:     Bless those who persecute you.
Don’t curse them; instead, pray that God will bless them.

Two:    Be happy with those who are happy,
and weep with those who weep.

One:     Live in harmony with each other.
Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people.
And don’t think you know it all!

Two:    Never pay back evil with more evil.
Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.
Do everything you can to live in peace with everyone.

One:     Dear friends, never take revenge.
Leave that to the righteous anger of God.
             For the Scriptures say,

Two:    “I will take revenge;
I will pay them back,”  says the Lord.

One:     Instead,

Two:    “If your enemies are hungry, feed them.
If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap
burning coals of shame on their heads.”

One:     So don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
                                                                                              (Psalm 30)

REFLECTION: ‘Living Sacrifices’                                Rev. Norlita Kaul

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

INVITATION TO THE TABLE
Jesus said: I am the bread of life. All who come to me shall not hunger, and all who believe in me shall not thirst.
With Christians around the world and throughout the centuries,
We gather around these symbols of bread and wine—simple elements that speak of nourishment and transformation.

THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Let us pray.
Loving God, we thank you that you are as close to us as breath, that your love is constant and unfailing. We thank you for all that sustains life, and especially for Jesus Christ, who teaches us how to live out an ethic of justice and peace, and for the promise of transformation made manifest in his life, death and resurrection.
We ask you to bless this bread and this cup. Through this meal, make us the body of Christ, that we may join with you in           promoting the well-being of all creation.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION
We remember on the night when Jesus and the disciples had their last meal together, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and gave it to the disciples, saying “This is my body, which is broken for you. Take and eat it, and as often as you do, remember me.”
In the symbol of the broken bread, we participate in the life of Christ and dedicate ourselves to being his disciples.
In the same way he took the cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to the disciples, saying: “Drink this, all of you. This cup is the new covenant, poured out for you and for many. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
In the symbol of the cup, we participate in the new life Christ brings. We thank you, O God through Your Holy Spirit, for the      gifts we receive as sure provisions, manna in the wilderness,  the source of our unending joy. So as your children we pray,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
We give thanks, loving God, that you have refreshed us at your table. Strengthen our faith; strengthen our nation, increase our love for one another. As we have been fed by the seed that became grain, and then became bread, may we go out into the world to plant seeds of justice, transformation, and hope. Amen.

*HYMN # 338 (Red) ‘O Beautiful for Spacious Skies’
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,
for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!
     America! America! God mend thine every flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
till all success be nobleness and every gain divine!

LITANY FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Leader: As we remember the birth of our nation, and the gifts of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, let us offer our thanks and prayers to God, the giver of all good gifts.
For the men and women who braved the long journey by sea to come to this new world.
          We thank you Lord.
For patriots who dreamed of, and fought for, a free nation.
            We thank you Lord.
For the men and women who laid the foundation of our democracy, and who pledged liberty and justice for all.
          We thank you Lord.
For those who built this country brick by brick, road by road, and town by town.
         We thank you Lord.
For the brave soldiers who have fought for our country, for all who paid for our freedom by their service, and those who paid by their sacrifice.
          We thank you Lord.
For the innovators and artists, poets and teachers, farmers and factory workers; for all who labor and provide for the common good.
          We thank you Lord.
For this land, with its peaks and valleys, coast and deserts, fields and meadows,
          We thank you Lord.
For our own community, for those who came before us in this place, and for our neighbors near and far,
            We thank you Lord.
Lord, we pray for The United States, that we might always be a nation which defends and promotes liberty and freedom, truth and justice,
          We pray to you Lord.
That we might always be a nation where all are free to worship and pray,
          We pray to you Lord.
That we might be a beacon of freedom to all those who live under the shadow of terror and hopelessness,
          We pray to you Lord.
That those who are elected to govern and lead, would be guided by you, and be ever aware of the trust that has been given them,
          We pray to you Lord.
That we would be a people who repent from our sins, and who always return to you and to your grace,
          We pray to you Lord.

Gracious God, Father of all nations, bless and defend us and our land, prosper the work of our hands, and increase in us your grace and compassion, and our offerings of thanks to you, our rock and our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
          Amen.

*HYMN  #354 (Red) ‘Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory’
     Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
     He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword.
     God’s truth is marching on.

     Refrain:
          Glory, glory hallelujah!
         Glory, glory hallelujah!
         Glory, glory hallelujah!
         God’s truth is marching on.

God has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
     and is sifting out all human hearts before the judgment seat;
O be swift, my soul, to answer; O be jubilant my feet!
Our God is marching on. [Refrain]

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
     with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me;
as he died to make us holy, let us live to make all free,
while God is marching on. [Refrain]
