5th Sunday after Pentecost
July 10, 2022
PRELUDE: Prelude on “Trentham”, Jackson/Lasky
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
People of God, what are we here to do?
To love the Lord our God with heart and soul, strength and might.
What are we here to do?
To love our neighbors as ourselves.
*HYMN #729 (Red) ‘Lord, I Want to be a Christian’ (verses 1 & 4)
Lord, I want to be a Christian
in my heart, in my heart.
Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.
In my heart, in my heart,
Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.
Lord, I want to be like Jesus
in my heart, in my heart.
Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.
In my heart, in my heart,
Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Claiming us in love, God beckons us to grow in that love and to reflect that love to others. Yet sin obstructs our efforts and prevents us from living as God intends. In penitence and faith, let us seek God’s forgiveness.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, by the work of your hands, you created all that is good. You formed us in Christ’s image, and you fashioned us with spiritual gifts according to your will. “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them. Yet you have made them a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor”. Created in your image, Lord, we have been made to serve and glorify you. Lord, help us to strengthen our gifts, and live empowered by your Spirit. Help us to find strength in serving one another, for we can accomplish far greater things in your name. And may we be your disciples, who help nurture and encourage the gifts of all others without envy or strife. God, we know the harvest is plentiful, so make us to labor together in the grace and love of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Mercy ceaselessly flows from the heart of God. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
*GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Faithful God, how blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Sanctify us by your Word and Spirit so that we may glorify you in the company of the faithful; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Good and upright is the Lord, instructing us in the way. Psalm 25
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 25:1-10 (read responsively)
1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I trust;
do not let me be put to shame;
do not let my enemies exult over me.
3 Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.
6 Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!
8 Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in what is right
and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
John 13:1-20
1 Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already decided that Judas son of Simon Iscariot would betray Jesus. And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 got up from supper, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had reclined again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, slaves are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But it is to fulfill the scripture, ‘The one who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur you may believe that I am he. 20 Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.”
He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble His way.

REFLECTION: ‘Servant Leadership’, An African Perspective
Rev. Norlita Kaul and Julie Graham
*HYMN #727 ‘Will You Let Me be Your Servant’ (verses 1, 2, 3, & 1)
Will you let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too!
We are pilgrims on a journey;
we’re together on the road.
We are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.
I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the nighttime of your fear.
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.
Will you let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too!
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –
Jesus Christ is God with humankind. He is the eternal Son of the Father, who became human and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. He is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. This work of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, humanity, and the world. Therefore, the church calls all people to be reconciled to God and to one another.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Great God in Heaven, you remind us to focus our ability on first loving you. Then, you urge us to reflect that love toward our neighbor. We desire to be the modern day “Good Samaritan.” Create anew in our hearts a burning desire to care for your children. Encourage us to follow the caring ways that Jesus taught. Multiply these tithes and offerings so acts of tolerance and hospitality are extended through our ministry to all of your children. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. (Luke 10:25-37 David S. Bell)
