SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
7th Sunday after Pentecost
July 24, 2022
PRELUDE:
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
Let us hear what the Lord our God speaks:
God speaks peace to God’s people, to the faithful, to those who turn to God in their hearts.
Seeking peace, in word, in song, and in prayer,
let us worship God.
*HYMN #462 (Red) ‘I Love to Tell the Story’
I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story because I know ‘tis true;
it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.
Refrain:
I love to tell the story; 'twill be my theme in glory
to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story; ‘tis pleasant to repeat
what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet!
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
the message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. [Refrain]
I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting to hear it, like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
'twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. [Refrain]
CALL TO CONFESSION
God’s salvation is at hand, that God’s glory may dwell in us. Turning towards God, let us confess the ways we have sinned.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of perfect love, we are cleansed and claimed by the love of Jesus Christ, our Savior. We are redeemed and restored by the self-emptying, sacrificial love poured out. And we are called to love you and all whom you call beloved children. Open our hearts to the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Help us to love as Christ loves: reconciling conflict, supporting all people in tragedy and triumph, and daily surrendering our will for the sake of walking with others. We know that in our own accord, we will be imperfect at this. We will fall short. We will disappoint others and miss opportunities. Yet, Lord, help us to show up, to share Christ, and to be a beacon of hope, justice, love and joy to all whom you call us to care for in our lives. For this we pray in the name of the one whose perfect love casts out all fear, Jesus Christ. Amen. (Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Beloved, God has forgiven all of your trespasses. You are alive together with God. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
*GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Sovereign God, let your Word rule in our hearts and your Spirit govern our lives until at last we see the fulfillment of your realm of justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Listen to the word of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Luke 11:1-13 (read responsively)
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying.
When he finished, one of his disciples approached him and asked,
“Teacher, would you teach us your way of prayer?
John taught his disciples his way of prayer, and we’re hoping you’ll do the same.”
Jesus answered: Here’s how to pray:
“Father in heaven, may your name be revered.
May your kingdom come.
May your will be accomplished on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us the food we need for tomorrow,
and forgive us for our wrongs, as we forgive those who wrong us.
And lead us away from temptation,
and save us from the evil one.”
When he had finished, he added this illustration to teach them more about prayer.
Imagine that one of your friends comes over at midnight. He bangs on the door and shouts,
“Friend, will you lend me three loaves of bread?
A friend of mine just showed up unexpectedly from a journey,
and I don’t have anything to feed him.”
Tell me, would you shout out from your bed,
“I’m already in bed, and so are the kids.
I already locked the door. I can’t be bothered”?
No, you know as well as I do: even if you didn’t care that this fellow was your friend, if he keeps knocking long enough, you’ll get up and give him whatever he needs simply because of his brash persistence!
So listen:
Keep on asking, and you will receive.
Keep on seeking, and you will find.
Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you.
All who keep asking will receive,
all who keep seeking will find,
and doors will open to those who keep knocking.
Some of you are parents/caretakers/nurturers, so ask yourselves this:
if your son comes up to you and asks for a fish for dinner,
will you give him a snake instead?
If your boy wants an egg to eat,
will you give him a scorpion?
Look, all of you are flawed in so many ways, yet in spite of your faults,
you know how to give good gifts to your children.
How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to all who ask!
Galatians 6:1-10 (The Message)
6 1-3 Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.
4-5 Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.
6 Be very sure now, you who have been trained to a self-sufficient maturity, that you enter into a generous common life with those who have trained you, sharing all the good things that you have and experience.
7-8 Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.
9-10 So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.
Keep these words in your heart. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
Thanks be to God. Deuteronomy 6:6
REFLECTION: ‘Sow, Grow, & Mow–Caring Relationships’ Rev. Norlita Kaul
*HYMN #468 (Red) ‘In My Life’
In my life, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.
In my life, Lord, be glorified today.
In our song, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.
In our song, Lord, be glorified today.
In your church, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.
In your church, Lord, be glorified today.
In your world, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.
In your world, Lord, be glorified today.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH –APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness,

Allelu, alleluia!
Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and you shall find;
knock, and the door shall be opened unto you.
Allelu, alleluia!
You shall not live by bread alone, but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Allelu, alleluia!

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*HYMN #515 (Red) ‘I Come with Joy’
I come with joy, a child of God,
forgiven, loved and free,
the life of Jesus to recall,
in love laid down for me,
in love laid down for me.
I come with Christians far and near
to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love
in Christ's communion bread,
in Christ’s communion bread.
As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share,
each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends,
and strangers now are friends.
The Spirit of the risen Christ,
unseen, but ever near,
is in such friendship better known,
alive among us here,
alive among us here.
Together met, together bound
by all that God has done,
we'll go with joy, to give the world
the love that makes us one,
the love that makes us one.
