ORDER OF WORSHIP and COMMUNION
10th Sunday after Pentecost
August 6, 2023
PRELUDE Prelude on “Trentham” Jackson/Lasky
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
We are a community of faith that has been created by God’s love.
We are people who have been set free by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
We have come not to exalt our own goodness,
but to praise the holiness of God.
We have come not to boast of what we have done,
but to proclaim the redeeming work of Jesus Christ.
All: Let us praise God and tell of God's goodness in our acts of kindness and love.
*HYMN: #344 (Blue) ‘Christ of the Upward Way’
Christ of the upward way, my guide divine,
Where You have set Your feet may I place mine;
And move and march wherever You have trod,
Keeping face forward up the hill of God.
Give me the heart to hear Your voice and will,
That without fault or fear I may fulfill
Your purpose with a glad and holy zest,
Like one who would not bring less than the best.
Christ of the upward way, my guide divine,
Where You have set your feet may I place mine;
And when Your last call comes serene and clear,
Calm may my answer be, “Lord, I am here.”
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess we have strayed away from your Word. We confess that we have allowed the worries of this world to drive us away from your vision for our lives. We confess that we have taken our focus off your Word; that we have not allowed your Word to work in our lives. We ask that you give us moments of rest and we ask you to give us courage to then step out and do your will. Grant understanding and wisdom that we may see your vision and apply it in our lives. Hear our prayer, O God, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, direct what we shall be, and call us back to you. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen. (silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING
Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21
13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
SERMON Stepping Out Donna Flint, CRE
*HYMN #329 (Blue) ‘Break Thou the Bread of Life’
Break Thou the bread of life, dear Lord to me,
As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord;
My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word!
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, now unto me;
As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;
Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall;
And I shall find my peace, my all in all.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—APOSTLES’ CREED (in unison)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
*DOXOLOGY

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you
And also with you
Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Prayer continues…
… we praise you, joining our voices with all the faithful of every time and place:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest.
Prayer continues…
…Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.
Prayer continues…
…Together we pray as our Lord has taught us to pray,
Our father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND BREAKING OF THE BREAD
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
*CLOSING HYMN #426 ‘Lord, Speak to Me, That I May Speak’
Lord, speak to me that I may speak
In living echoes of Thy tone.
As Thou hast sought, so let me seek
Thine erring children lost and lone.
O lead me, Lord, that I may lead
The wandering and the wavering feet;
O feed me, Lord, that I may feed
Thy hungering ones with manna sweet.
O teach me, Lord, that I may teach
The precious things Thou dost impart;
And wing my words, that they may reach
The hidden depths of many a heart.
O fill me with Thy fullness, Lord,
Until my very hearts o'erflows
In kindling thought and glowing word,
Thy love to tell, Thy praise to show.
O use me, Lord, use even me,
Just as Thou wilt, and when, and where
Until Thy blessed face I see,
Thy rest, Thy joy, Thy glory share.
