SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
10th Sunday after Pentecost August 14, 2022 PRELUDE: WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Come away from the rush and worry of the world to worship God. We come seeking peace and quiet for our souls. Rest your spirits. Quiet your hearts. God is with us. Praise be to God who calls us. *HYMN #469 (Blue) ‘Morning Has Broken’ Morning has broken like the first morning, blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them springing fresh from the Word! Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new day! CALL TO CONFESSION God doesn’t call us to see if we’re good enough. God calls us because God is good. When we confess our sins, God listens and God recreates us, just as he recreates each new day. Please join me in the prayer of confession. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty and everlasting God, As we go about our daily lives, we often walk on by…walk on by opportunities to give you glory, walk on by people who are hungry, walk on by wrongs that should be corrected, walk on by people who need our attention. God forgive us and help us to stop and do Your work in this world. Redirect our paths so that we are more worthy of your son Jesus who died on the cross so we could be forgiven. In Jesus' Name, Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Friends, believe this good news. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us, and we have been redeemed. Thanks be to God. Amen. *GLORIA PATRI (please stand) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION O Lord, your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Give us the grace to receive your truth in faith and love, and the strength to follow the path you have set before us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord & Savior, Amen. SCRIPTURE READINGS Psalm 34:1-8 (read responsively) 1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. 5 Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. 6 This poor soul cried, and was heard by the LORD, and was saved from every trouble. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. GOSPEL READING Mark 10: 46-52 46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” 52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. REFLECTION: ‘Happenstance’ Robby Flint, CRE *HYMN #324 (Blue) ‘Open My Eyes that I May See’ Open my eyes that I may see glimpses of truth Thou hast for me. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, Thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my ears that I may hear voices of truth Thou sendest clear, and while the wave notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for Thee, ready, my God, Thy will to see. Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my mouth and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere. Open my heart and let me prepare love with Thy children thus to share. Silently now I wait for Thee, ready, my God, Thy will to see. Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine! AFFIRMATION OF FAITH -- Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. INVITATION TO OFFERING SPECIAL MUSIC: ‘I Come to Him’ Sally DeFord, composer Donna F, soloist; Mary E, piano; Nancy O, violin *DOXOLOGY (please stand) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen PRAYER OF DEDICATION God, we praise you and thank you for all the blessings which you have bestowed on us. We return a portion of what you have given to us and ask that you empower this church to use these gifts for your work. In Jesus name, Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. HYMN #364 (Blue) ‘I Sing a Song of the Saints of God’ I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, God helping, to be one too. They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and God’s love made them strong; and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake, the whole of their good lives long. And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast: and there’s not any reason, no, not the least, why I shouldn’t be one too. They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still; the world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea; for the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too. ANNOUNCEMENTS BENEDICTION May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent, one from another. Amen. (Mizpah Benediction) POSTLUDE |
