SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
August 15, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
God is the source of wisdom,
the fount of life eternal.
Let us listen for the wisdom of God
and worship the One whose words shape the world.
*HYMN #430 “Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!”
Come sing, O church, in joy!
Come join, O church, in song!
For Christ the Lord has led us through the ages long!
In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now
And praise the Lord!
Long years have come and gone,
And still God reigns supreme,
Empowering us to catch the vision, dream the dream!
In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now
And praise the Lord!
Let courage be our friend,
Let wisdom be our guide,
As we in mission magnify the Crucified!
In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now
And praise the Lord!
Come sing, O church, in joy!
Come join, O church, in song!
For Christ the Lord has triumphed o’er the ages long!
In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now
And praise the Lord!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
The Spirit of God helps us in our weakness,
interceding with sighs too deep for words.
Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O Lord, the voice of your wisdom rings out in the world, guiding us to place our trust in you. The voice of your wisdom rings out in the world, challenging us to seek the things that matter. Too often, O Lord, we refuse to listen. We place our trust in things that are fleeting. We seek the things that make us comfortable, rather than seeking the way of your peace. Forgive us, God of grace, and teach us to walk in the path lined by your wisdom.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Hear the good news of God’s promise: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Am
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
We praise and thank You for the Holy Scriptures which You have caused to be written for our learning. Thank You for Your written Word, which reveals to us the living Word of God, in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You that in Him has been revealed all wisdom and grace, all knowledge and understanding, all truth and hope, all life and light. And thank You Father, that in Him You have spoken to us, Your children. Help us Holy Spirit to illumine our hearts, minds and spirits now as we read your Word. In Christ's name and for his sake, Amen.
O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
Ezekiel 37:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Proverbs 9:1-6 (read responsively)
1 Wisdom has built her house,
she has hewn her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine,
she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls
from the highest places in the town,
4 “You that are simple, turn in here!”
To those without sense she says,
5 “Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Lay aside immaturity, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”
Ephesians 5:15-20
5 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is the good news which we have received,
in which we stand, and by which we are saved.
Thanks be to God. 1 Corinthians 15:1–2
REFLECTION: “Wisdom Speaks” Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN: #327 “O Word of God Incarnate”
O Word of God incarnate,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky;
We praise You for the radiance
That from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps,
Shines on from age to age.
The church from You, dear Savior,
Received this gift divine,
And still that light is lifted
On all the earth to shine.
It is the chart and compass,
That, all life’s voyage through,
Amid the rocks and quicksands,
Still guides, O Christ, to You.
O make Your church, dear Savior,
A lamp of purest gold,
To bear before the nations
Your true light, as of old;
O teach Your wandering pilgrims
By this our path to trace,
Till, clouds and storms thus ended,
We see You face to face.

INVITATION TO OFFERING
There is only one Lord and God from whom all things come and for whom we live. Let us offer our lives to the Lord.
DOXOLOGY (please stand)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
O God, we are taught to give as an act of faithfulness. We are reminded that giving is a Christian responsibility. Like Paul taught the early Christians, we are taught to be careful how we live—to live as wise people. Yet, sometimes we are drawn by the insufficient promises of our everyday culture. We end up giving with a begrudging attitude, a hesitant heart, or selfish reluctance. Forgive us! Enable us in this very moment to give “thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Amen.
Ephesians 5:15-20 (David S. Bell)
