SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 22, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship, please join me in the Call to Worship.
CALL TO WORSHIP
As we come to worship, we open our eyes to see his glory.
We open our ears to hear his wisdom.
We open our hands to offer him gifts.
We open our mouths to sing his praise.
We open our hearts to offer him our love.
We come to worship God.
*HYMN #267 All Things Bright and Beautiful
Refrain:
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings:
God made their glowing colors,
God made their tiny wings. (Refrain)
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset, and the morning
That brightens up the sky. (Refrain)
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
God made them every one. (Refrain)
God gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well. (Refrain)
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Loving God, we are grateful that You bring your Grace and Hope into our midst today. We ask that you open our hearts, our spirits, and our minds to what you proclaim to us today, so that when we leave here today, our lives will proclaim to others not that God seeks vengeance on the world, but that God loves the world and promises God’s grace. In the name of Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
Call to Confession:
Prayer of Confession
God of love, we are prone to run away when You demand too much of us. In our fear, we forget that you provide all the tools we need to do Your work in our world. Forgive our wandering ways and help us to do Your will and to minister to Your people. Forgive us when we judge others and would rather see them punished than to see Your grace redeem them. If we are honest, we know we are judged, found wanting, yet Your mercy and grace redeems us. We are grateful that Your love is stronger than the world’s hate and that Your mercy is greater than our desire for vengeance. We pray all this in your holy name, Amen.
Words of Assurance
This is true love; not our love for God but God’s love for us. Through God’s grace, we are forgiven and free.
Thanks be to God!
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Living God, help us to hear your holy Word, that we may truly understand; and that, understanding, we may believe, and that believing, we may follow in all faithfulness and obedience, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READING: The book of Jonah (read from the Message).

HYMN: #298 There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in God's justice,
Which is more than liberty.
There is no place where earth’s sorrows
Are more felt than up in heaven;
There is no place where earth’s failings
Have such kindly judgment given.
For the love of God is broader
Than the measures of the mind;
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.
If our love were but more faithful,
We would gladly trust God's word;
And our lives reflect thanksgiving
For the goodness of our Lord.
The Word has been spoken, let us Affirm our Faith using words from the Belhar confession
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe in the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who gathers, protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit. This, God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe that Christ’s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another; that unity is, therefore, both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ; that this unity must become visible so that the world may believe that separation, enmity and hatred between people and groups is sin which Christ has already conquered; that this unity of the people of God must be manifested and be active in a variety of ways; in that we love one another; that we experience, practice and pursue community with one another; that we need one another and upbuild one another, admonishing and comforting one another. We believe that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
(taken from the Belhar confession, adopted by the 222nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 2016)

*HYMN #438 Blest Be the Tie that Binds
Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.
Before our Father’s throne
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
Our comforts and our cares.
We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear,
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.
From sorrow, toil, and pain,
And sin we shall be free;
And perfect love and friendship reign
Through all eternity.
