SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 29, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
Liturgist- As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship, please join me in the Call to Worship
CALL TO WORSHIP
Children of God, welcome!
God calls us to this place of love and grace,
God calls us to this place of hope and perseverance.
God calls all of us to be a part of the beloved community,
God calls all of us to share in the good news:
We are welcome, just as we are… We are loved, just as we are.
In gratitude for all of this, let us worship God.
*HYMN #461 ‘God is Here!’
God is here! As we Your people
Meet to offer praise and prayer,
May we find in fuller measure
What it is in Christ we share.
Here, as in the world around us,
All our varied skills and arts
Wait the coming of the Spirit
Into open minds and hearts.
Here are symbols to remind us
Of our lifelong need of grace;
Here are table, font, and pulpit;
Here the cross has central place.
Here in honesty of preaching,
Here in silence, as in speech,
Here, in newness and renewal,
God the Spirit comes to each.
Here our children find a welcome
In the Shepherd's flock and fold;
Here, as bread and wine are taken,
Christ sustains us as of old.
Here the servants of the Servant
Seek in worship to explore
What it means in daily living
To believe and to adore.
Lord of all, of church and kingdom,
In an age of change and doubt,
Keep us faithful to the gospel;
Help us work Your purpose out.
Here, in this day's dedication,
All we have to give, receive;
We, who cannot live without You,
We adore You! We believe!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Heavenly Father, we gather here today, ready for You to lead us. We know that you do not need us to do Your work, but celebrate that you love us enough to call us to do Your work. Open our ears, our minds, and our hearts to listen to Your call as we worship today. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION:
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. For these things we ask your forgiveness and we also ask for your strength. Give us clear minds and open hearts so we may witness to You in our world. Remind us to be who You would have us to be regardless of what we are doing or who we are with. Hold us to You and build our relationship with You and with those You have given us on earth. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Dear God, please use these scriptures to reveal more of your love, truth and promises to us. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READING:
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
1The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.
10When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.
Gospel Mark 1:14-20
14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
The is the word of God for the people of God
Thanks be to God
REFLECTION: “God is Calling Donna Flint, CRE
HYMN: We are Called to be God’s People”
(words by Thomas Jackson sung to the Hayden tune found in #285 in our hymnal)
We are called to be God's people
Showing by our lives His grace
One in heart and one in spirit
Sign of hope for all the race
Let us show how He has changed us
And remade us as His own
Let us share our life together
As we shall around His throne
We are called to be God's servants
Working in His world today
Taking His own task upon us
All His sacred words obey
Let us rise then to His summons
Dedicate to Him our all
That we may be faithful servants
Quick to answer now His call
We are called to be God's prophets
Speaking for the truth and right
Standing firm for godly justice
Bringing evil into light
Let us seek the courage needed
Our high calling to fulfill
That we all may know the blessing
Of the doing of God's will
Liturgist - The Word has been spoken, let us Affirm our Faith using words from the Confession of 1967
Affirmation of Faith
Wherever the church exists, its members are both gathered in corporate life and dispersed in society for the sake of mission in the world. The church gathers to praise God, to hear his word for mankind, to baptize and to join in the Lord’s Supper, to pray for and present the world to him in worship, to enjoy fellowship, to receive instruction, strength, and comfort, to be tested, renewed, and reformed. The church disperses to serve God wherever its members are, at work or play, in private or in the life of society. Their prayer and Bible study are part of the church’s worship and theological reflection. Their witness is the church’s evangelism. Their daily action in the world is the church in mission to the world. The quality of their relation with other persons is the measure of the church’s fidelity. Each member is the church in the world, endowed by the Spirit with some gift of ministry.

Arise, your light is come!
The Spirit’s call obey;

Arise, your light is come!
Fling wide the prison door;
Proclaim the captives’ liberty,
Good tidings to the poor.
Arise, your light is come!
All you in sorrow born,
Bind up the broken-hearted ones
And comfort those who mourn.
Arise, your light is come!
The mountains burst in song!
Rise up like eagles on the wing;
God’s power will make us strong.
