SUNDAY ORDER OF WORSHIP
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 19, 2021
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
When the world around us seems to be shaking,
God’s love is our foothold, which shall not be moved.
When the life within us is dry and parched,
God’s word is our wellspring, our fount of living water.
Let us worship the One who offers us wisdom
and teaches us how to serve.
*HYMN #466 “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My dear Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of God’s grace!
Jesus, the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life and health, and peace.
Christ breaks the power of reigning sin,
And sets the prisoner free;
Christ’s blood can make the sinful clean;
Christ’s blood availed for me.
My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, you call your church to witness that in Christ we are reconciled to you. Help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
Trusting in God’s grace, together let us confess our sin:
(Luke 15:10)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
You told us, O Lord, that whoever wants to be first must be last and servant of all. Oh, how we long to be first, O God: to climb every ladder, frame every achievement, get every promotion, and obtain every glory. Oh, how we long to be first, O God, and oh, how we dread being last. Forgive us, O humble Christ, and by your forgiveness, teach us. Teach us to reframe our priorities. Teach us to be servants first, and to let our lives flow from a heart of faith.
(Silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON/DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)
We praise and thank you Lord Jesus for your unending words of hope, love, life, and forgiveness.
Thanks be to God.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy Spirit, make your face shine upon your servants, open our hearts, minds and spirits, and teach us your statutes. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
The church’s commission, upon which its freedom is founded, consists in delivering the message of the free grace of God to all people in Christ’s stead, and therefore in the ministry of his own Word and work through sermon and Sacrament. Declaration of Barmen 8.26
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Proverbs 31:10-31 (insert) (read responsively)
10 A capable wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She seeks wool and flax,
and works with willing hands.
14 She is like the ships of the merchant,
she brings her food from far away.
15 She rises while it is still night
and provides food for her household
and tasks for her servant-girls.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength,
and makes her arms strong.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She puts her hands to the distaff,
and her hands hold the spindle.
20 She opens her hand to the poor,
and reaches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid for her household when it snows,
for all her household are clothed in crimson.
22 She makes herself coverings;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the city gates,
taking his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them;
she supplies the merchant with sashes.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household,
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her happy;
her husband too, and he praises her:
29 “Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Give her a share in the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the city gates.
Mark 9:30-37
Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them
Liturgist: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.
They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant. After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?”
Liturgist: But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
Liturgist: Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them:
“Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me, but also my Father who sent me.
A TIME FOR CHILDREN
James 3:13-4:3, 6-8
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.
1 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2 You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 6 But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says,
“God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Lo, I am with you always to the close of the age.
Matthew 28:20
The word of God is not fettered.
II Timothy 2;9
Thanks be to God.
REFLECTION: “The Good Life” Rev. Norlita Kaul
HYMN: (insert) “Wonderful Words of Life”
Sing them over again to me,
Wonderful words of Life;
Let me more of their beauty see,
Wonderful words of Life;
Words of life and beauty
Teach me faith and duty.
Refrain:
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of Life;
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of Life.
Christ, the blessed One, gives to all
Wonderful words of Life;
Sinner, list to the loving call,
Wonderful words of Life;
All so freely given,
Wooing us to Heaven. [Refrain]
Sweetly echo the gospel call,
Wonderful words of Life;
Offer pardon and peace to all,
Wonderful words of Life;
Jesus, only Savior,
Sanctify forever. [Refrain]
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
The Christian Church is the congregation of the brethren in which Jesus Christ acts presently as the Lord in Word and Sacrament through the Holy Spirit. As the church of pardoned sinners, it has to testify in the midst of a sinful world, with its faith as with its obedience. With its message as with its order, that it is solely his property, and that it lives and wants to live solely from his comfort and from his direction in the expectation of his appearance.
(Declaration of Barmen, 8.17)
